This Day in History - Nov. 18, 1978
« on: November 18, 2010, 05:05:00 AM »
Jonestown incident: In Guyana, Jim Jones led his Peoples Temple cult to a
mass murder-suicide that claimed 918 lives in all, 909 of them in Jonestown itself, including
more than 270 children. Congressman Leo J. Ryan is murdered by members of the Peoples Temple
hours earlier.

The lesson I get is that there have always been false prophets and cults in this world who teach and preach lies to control people for their own misguided ideals. People like him prey on folks who have no real knowledge of the Bible and are easily swayed by a powerful, smooth talking man telling them what the Bible says, instead of learning for themselves. There are a lot of people hungry for Gods word but are mislead by cultists like jones. Reminds me of another cult that encourages people to kill themselves and innocents because they are told that God will reward them. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

No real lesson other than the obvious.
Just happened across it and thought it was worth sharing.

I don't remember for sure but wasn't this the incidence where the phrase "Just drink the coolaid." came from?

Recordings were made at the site while Jones was urging his people to poison themselves. It is an excellent lesson in groupthink. The recordings actually pick up the sounds of mothers poisoning their children, and the crying as they died. You can find these on the web somewhere.
