Model 629-1
« on: November 10, 2010, 02:37:13 AM »
My 84 year old Father in Law graciously handed me his 629-1 amoung several other guns.  It was very rewarding to be able to thank him in person for this "inheritance".
Can someone help me date the 629-1?  The serial number is AWB 91**.  Stainless, in the original box, and very nice condition. :o  At some point he had it magna-ported.
I also have two other S&W's I'd like to date.  A .38 cal. Model 60, serial# R2934**, and a 9mm semi auto model 659, serial # TAF 56**.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AWB 91**... 1987
R2934**... 1980-81
TAF 56**... 1985-86

If you can post the product code from the end of the box for the 629, it may be able to be determined if the magna-porting was done to the gun as part of some sort of limited production run or special edition.

Shaylex,
I want to really thank you for the help.
The product code is 103606.
My Father in Law was a collector more than a shooter so the guns are all in really nice shape.
He gave me this Model 629, a S&W Model 27-2, Ruger .41 mag, Ruger .44 mag (Made in 1979 and never fired), Taurus 9mm, Remington Model 1100 12 gauge, and a Remington 30-06 semi auto.
He has said for years that he was going to leave them to me.  To be able to look him in the eye and express my gratitude instead of doing it in front of a head stone was priceless.
He still has a Ruger .45 Long Colt, Cimarron Vaquero .45 Long Colt, S&W .22 revolver (old, don't know the model), and a Ruger 10/22.
He is an arm chair sportsman and he is brilliant.
Thanks for the help.

Zulu,
103606 is the product code for a standard production 6" made from 84-98. Magna-porting must've been added after the fact. No matter, still a great gun and sounds like you've got a great F-I-L. You're a lucky man.
