Help on some reading

Being that I'm still really new to shooting sports I'm trying to learn as much as I can.  I snooped around the FAQ's and found somethings(btw the ATF link appears to be broken, at least on my end) mostly reloading and some balistic tables, but I'm looking for more general shooting data such as form, different types of actions (pros and cons of each, etc) as well as different calibers of bullets, their history and pros and cons of them.  I'm also just looking for any general information that ya'll think people need to know as common knowledge.  I have been floating around wikipedia reading up there, but I was hoping ya'll might have some other places to go with more common knowledge and comparisons,  wikipedia is really only good for history and development.

Just so ya'll now I'm the type of person that follows the adage of "know something about everything, and everything about something."

Levi, I'd just wander around these forums.  There's a world of information right here.  Since you're new at shooting and reloading, I'd go with a single shot such as a Handi for the simple reason singles will make you a better marksman.   I'd probably go with the .45-70.  It is versatile if you can reload and is easy to load for.  I like it and the pistol caliber carbines for the same reason.......all Handis.

I don't know if this helps much, but it is what I do and it works for me.

Levi, I wish I could help, but........Ive spent (mis-spent?) over half my life in pursuit of that knowledge and wisdom and aint even close. I too love the research and analysis, it seems to keep me going in between actually playing with the silly things. Shooting is a marvelous mental exercise (T. Jefferson thought so too, and he was pretty sharp).
At first just follow your nose where it leads you; if a topic or book, etc. catches your interest then do it. After a bit you will find your interests getting more specifically defined and you will develope some focus.
Visit some shooting ranges and get to know some shooters; most will be glad to talk their passion with you (but NOT while they are trying to shoot!) and probably let you try their guns.
Before you spend any big money on something maybe bounce it off us here, we will try to keep you from getting burned.

Thanks guys.  I already have a handi in .223 a marlin .17hmr, and looking to add a new .22lr sometime shortly.  I have been wandering around but I can't really find much general information that I'm looking for,  I'm sure most of it is I just haven't look deep enough, (There is A LOT of post on here)  I have looked over amazon for some books, but I don't want to buy a book that really doesn't give out good information,  I'd rather get  2 or 3 good books to read through, than 8 or 9 mediocre ones.  Also any good websites will help alot,  I have been pouring over a few ballistic tables but a lot of technical info gets hard for me to absorb at times, lol.

If I might suggest "The Hunting Rifle" by Jack O'Connor and "The Complete Book of Shooting".  I've read a lot on our addiction, um... hobby... and these do a pretty good job.  Just as with anything else, it is one man's opinion, but O'Connor is a good read anyway and I always enjoy his writing.  These are some "older" books, but the information is just as relevant; there's only so many ways to make a gun go bang and hit the intended target.

I would recommend Barnes "Cartridges of the World", the Lyman Reloading Manual, plus anything written by Jack O'Connor, Elmer Keith, Jeff Cooper for starters.

Check out some good reloading manuals.  A good one will have a short history on each cartridge before getting to the load data.  The load data will also help you with comparing different calibers.  A good manual will also have ballistic tables in the back.  Using speed and bc you'll be able to look at different cartridges that way too.
