loose recoil tube on ithaca
« on: November 21, 2010, 08:12:49 PM »
I have an Ithaca 51 and the recoil tube is loose causing the stock to wiggle and cannot be tightened (stock bolt draws stock all way down on end of recoil tube but not against receiver). There is a pin  that holds it into the receiver and so it seems to be in the correctly possitioned, but the stock to receiver fit suggests that it is out by 1/16 inch or so.

Any quick fix? Spacer on stock, recoil tube? A circular cut in the receiver also suggest that i'm missing a buffer of some kind. What would work here and how thick?

Below you should find a link to a parts diagram or the 51. Perhaps it'll give you an idea of whats missing.. I've not worked with many of these but the stock attactment seems pretty straight forward. If the action tube is loose that may indicate the problem. They were assembled to the receiver and looseness indicates there is something amiss..

Ok, the action tube does wiggle around but i kept looking at it: there is a retaining pin that keeps it in place and the hole for it has not enlarged any: so i took another look at the parts that wear faster and yup, the problem there was in the stock. Fixed.

The part that's missing is called a bolt buffer and i do see that Numrich doesn't have it. Will start looking elsewhere, could i carve down a rubber test tube stopper to the proper dimension for acceptable function?
