Help with loads for 25-06
« on: November 17, 2010, 01:57:31 PM »
I have a Tikka Whitetail hunter in 25-06 with the 1-10 twist.  Can some suggest a good deer load that will also produce very small groups!

sort of like suggesting the perfect size plate at the buffet. I would suggest you get a Lyman reloading manual , they list their best performing loads, and the best theoretically accurate loads from statistical analysis. That is only a start though, only shooting can really tell.

Thanks.
I have tons of load data.  What I am hoping for is information from someone that either has first hand knowledge of loading for a 25-06 with a 10" twist or better on loads for a Tikka 25-06.

I would much rather start from a suggestion from someone that has developed a load for this rifle.

Ive got two 2506 rifles and have owned two others. Probalby the best shooting bullet if i looked at all 4 would be the 117 grain seirra flat based spizter followed closely by the 115 ballitic tip and the 115 partition (the bullet i use most) for powders id try 4831sc re19 and re22.

I have a Browning BBR bought in the late 70's in 25-06.  Mine shoots 100 gr Sierra bullets slightly better than 117-120 grain bullets, but both are excellent.  I usually hunt with 120 gr.  I like IMR-4831.

Thanks for the info guys.
I guess I really got lucky.  I ordered 115 Berger (cause I have very good results with em) and went with Lyman's suggestion of H1000.  So here is the load data.

Nosler Brass
Federal Match large rifle primer
115 Berger VLD hunting bullet
56g H1000

This load is shooting inside quarter inch groups at @100 yards.  Really just one big hole with 5 shots.   After that I decided that was good enough.  I do love these Tikkas!  Have yet to see one that would not shoot.

Since 1971 I have owned 7 2506s, and have never really ever, fired anything but hand-loads thru them. The 2506 is "inherently accurate" with proof being, it has been for many years been used at Camp Perry rifle matches. It is right up there with the 308, and 223 in the accuracy dept.
In every rifle I owned (7) I later floated the barrels, and glass bedded the actions although I admit it was not always necessary, but I wanted all the accuracy I knew the rifle was capable of. My deer loads were not only great deer loads, but all shot under an inch at 100 yards.
They were:a Speer 87 grain spire point over 60 grains of Reloader 19 powder for 3600fps, and a 100 grain Nosler partition over 58 grains of of Reloader 22 powder. I got these loads from a Hornady manual, but have loaded these velocities for many years, and as the warning labels say: I ain't responsible if you blow yourself up, I'm just sayin what I use.
Some will opt for the 100 grain Nosler, but I have never seen a deer, muley or whitetail, that the 87 grainer out of a 2506 wouldn't down.

I use 100g partitions in my 6.5x55 and have taken several deer at long ranges.  I may have to try em.  Thanks.
