Browning High-Wall, convert to .308 Win?
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:18:13 AM »

Dear Guys,

I love the look of the Browning High-Wall, but hate the thought of getting one in .30-06.  I love the .308 Winchester.

Has anyone ever tried to use one of the chamber inserts (which converts a .30-06 chamber to .308 Win), in the High Wall?   On paper, it should work OK.  But what about in reality?

I have heard from several military guys over the years that the chamber insert works fine in the 1903A3 rifles, and even in the M1 Garands.  (They insert them with blue lok-tight).

Thanks for any comments.

For your intended situation, the .30-06 would be a better cartridge, inspite of your animosity about it.

Compare the ballistics and see for yourself...

Probably get flamed but have gotten easier accuracy from the '06 than the 308. My sako '06 will outshoot my rem 700 sendero 308 any day of the week. Those chamber inserts were used by the military and had a disgusting habit of comeing out on occasion. One of the reasons the military went  to 308 chambered garands for match shooting. Frank

HI,

Chamber inserts come do come out because of the manner of extraction in a semi-auto.  In a single shot, I wouldn't worry about it.
