Swedish M38 Trigger Question
« on: December 05, 2003, 05:05:01 PM »
This question is addressed to all gunsmiths out there:
Is there any improvement that can be done to my Swedish M38 Carbine (6.5x55mm) military 2-stage trigger, next to replacing it?  I am told that to make a serious improvement in accuracy, I need to replace the 2-stage trigger with an after market drop-in version.  This will require releaving the stock in most cases which I'm loath to do.....gotta keep her original, ya know??? Aren't the Swedish Target M96 models still using military 2-stage triggers.....perhaps tweaked a bit?
Next to using a little moly grease on the sear, is there anything I or qualified gunsmith can do to really improve the military trigger?

a good smith can lighten the pull and smooth it significantly.  While it will never be a double lever propped sear trigger it can be a lot better than the standard military.  The problem may be finding a good smith that will tackle it.  Insurabce companies take a dim view of that sort of thing..  You are limited somewhat buy the tolerances in the bolt to receivern fit but that's the point of the 2-stage trigger assembly..  3 pounds should be reachable but the 2 stage needs to stay.  It allows the lighter pull and still retains the safety margin...

savageT  try moly first but work it in good it will reduce the trigger by up to 50% or more in some cases I have seen.  You may want to look at the sear too it may need a little smoothing out if its that rough of a trigger a fine stone 400 or 600 grit can do that, then moly and work it in I have taken that course on some bad handguns too.  I'm surprised your trigger is rough on the swede?  But no biggie you can fix that.    BigBill

Big Bill,
Thanks for the help.  I really don't think the trigger is rough or creapy, although I believe the Husqvarnas 38's are not as well finished as the earlier Carl Gustaf 96's.  Do I need to disassemble the trigger in order to work the moly into the sear face? What about the bolt release that is just under the bolt?

savageT I would just do the bottom of the bolt stone it and polish it if you have a buffer pad with some compound too if its that rough.  I just got a swede from Samco that the trigger is a dream(CG) remember these are older than the Husqvarna's and have seen more wear too so they are  most likely smoother.  I'll pull out one of my Husqvarna's and check it out and let you know.  Ok I checked my M38 Husky and its smoother than my CG is.   Its even on the hairy side and i never did anything with it yet.                                                                      BigBill
