my .223 does not like 55gr vmax's
« on: November 21, 2010, 01:29:06 PM »
so my heavy barrel .223 does not like 55gr vmax's. i checked my mounts and rings and still my groups were all over the place. so i am either going to try winchester supreme, factory loaded with a 50gr nosler or i am trying hornady 40gr vmax's. i am also interested in trying that new hornady super varmit i seen on tv. basically am looking for a good factory round for coyotes.

You must have a picky one. Mine likes the cheap Remington 55gr and the Fiochi 55gr.

Have you went thru the FAQ and done the forend tricks? are you shooting clean or dirty barrel? Are you waiting for cool down between shots or shooting one after the other? All these things will make a difference. ;)

What twist is your barrel? Like Lonny said... check the FAQ's for tips and tricks on how to make handi's shoot better.
A couple quick things would be to take the forearm off and see if it shoots better... if it does then you need to work on the forearm. Check the latch shelf too and make sure there's no oil on it. Wipe it off and make sure it's dry... if there's oil or crud on the shelf you won't get a consistent lockup and it won't shoot well. Another quick tip is to make sure you are pulling the trigger fully to the rear each time you fire it... sounds silly but that'll cause bad groups too.
Hope some of this helps.
