Best ammo to use for a 12 g slug gun (Not a USGH!)
« on: November 12, 2010, 07:35:08 AM »
I'm trying to narrow down the list for the best slugs to use in my slug gun.  I know, I know you have to test each one because each gun is different...but I am looking to get a few suggestions.  Currently I use the Hornady SST 2 3/4" with a Simmons 3x9x50 scope (not sure which barrel it is called since it is drilled and tapped for a scope and has sights on it) with pretty good results.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

Hard to say. You didn't mention how the SSTs are grouping for you, If they are acceptable for you stick with them. Neither if my 20ga slug gun likes the higher velocity rounds SSTs of federal barnes expanders. My 20ga Tracker II literally drives tacks with Lightfields and my 20ga USH is a close 2nd with Buckhammers

my friend's 12 ga h&r likes the 1oz barnes expanders & the 1 3/8 oz buckhammers.  both are slower velocity slugs, around 1500 fps per the manufacturers. my own experience with the 1800 to 2000 fps slugs is they tend too be less accurate.  if you want to win the "biggest hole" contest then use buckhammers. ;D

My smooth bore shorty shoots the STD rem slithers into a coffee cup at fifty yards with a peep site.

My rifled light weight handi looked barnes expanders.

My USH HATES expanders sending them tumbling any which way. But shoots both ultra slugs and buck hammers very well.

Your correct every barrel has it's own likes and dislikes.

I haven't tried them but read much good about the lightfids.

I'll second that.

Due to their low price, I decided to try the Buckhammers.  I will have to try these out and report back.  Thanks for the input.
