here's hoping
« on: December 06, 2010, 05:46:30 PM »
not exactly h&r/nef subject, but that's mostly what i shoot, and here's where i do most of my reading, so here we go. bought bullets off of gunbroker from oregun, .244, 6mm, 7mm, for $50/500. speer and "major man." bulk. will find out how good they are in the future, but just couldn't see going wrong at 10cts. each, compared to 18 to 25cts. each thru "normal" supply sources. anybody had any experience here with these bullets? normally get what you pay for, just hoping i found a genuine bargain. here's to lotsa shootin', jather........

Bulk bullets are not always a bad thing , I shoot tons of Speer ( TNT ) as well as Midsouth ( Varmint Nightmare ) bulk bullets and have found that they do just fine for normal use , granted they may or may not work for Bench Rest shooting but you woln't know till you try .  ;)

Speer are usually pretty good bullets. Not first choice, as a rule, but still should do what you need done.

As Hunting bullets remember:

Bullet placement
Bullet Placement
Bullet placement

For accuracy on paper:

You can test a whole lot of variables without breaking your bank and I could not have said it better than you,

I have used speer bulk bullets for the 308 and 223 . both FMJ both were about as accurate as any FMJ . Both left copper in the bbl which I also experinced with other speer bullets , no big deal really. I have also bought bulk Winchester and Remington bullets and had good experinceses SP? . If you want accuracy weigh the bullets and if they weigh different seperate them to weight and shoot same weight bullets for group. I sometimes do this with handgun bullets.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

i wouldn't shy away from them. my vanguard puts those bulk varmint nightmare bullets into 1/2" just about every time out. so i'd say those bullets must not be the weak link :)

Don't know about bulk versions of Speer bullets but I get very good accuracy, even extremely good accuracy out of .308 cal Speer hot cores in 180 and 200 grains - shot a 3/8 in 3 shot group at 10 yds with the 200 gr about a month ago. I often get 1.5 to 2 in groups at 170 yds with a variety of Speer 30 cal in my 300 win mag. Also in my .223 Ruger 1, some of my best loads are with the Speer 52 gr hp and 55 gr spire soft point - tho this gun is doing well to shoot to .75 to 1 inch with any bullet and any load.  I like Speer bullets a lot.

Let us know how they perform for you.
