Had a Shot
« on: November 24, 2010, 05:56:53 AM »
Last day, finally cleared off, got colder...a big buck jumped up on the hill and I was down in the hollow.  I had one shot and it wasn't going to get better but it was through brush.  First shot all season...I was carrying my 35 Rem Marlin because it has a nice Nikon scope but the 45-70 would have been better. The 35 did not get through.   >:(  I have learned a valuable lesson.  Where I hunt, in close brush and shots no more that 70 yards, the 45-70 is the only thing to carry.

Too bad about the miss buddy. it happens to all of us and it sucks every time. the 35 remington and the 45-70 are both great cartridges but nothing is "brush proof"
I've shot at standing deer in the woods and had them walk off without a flinch. yup... you guessed it... the bullet had hit a tiny twig or something that wasn't visible in the scope.
keep your chin up buddy... you'll get the next one. ;)

Yep no such thing as a brush busting bullet.I only use peep sights in the thick stuff and its all thick here. You for sure have a couple of the nicer rounds out there.

Yep, 'brush buster' is a misnomer, but those two cal. are better than high speed spitzers. Even so, a miss by deflection (or worse yet, a bad wounding hit) is still deflection. You are a lot better off having a clean miss. I just have to have a scope now, to see that small suff, but I still have to carefully LOOK for it rather than just focusing on the animal.

BluDino,

The only real "brush buster" I know of is the main gun on an Abrams Tank.  It doesn't take much wood to deflect or destroy a bullet.  I watched a friend take a 50 yard shot at a doe with a 1.5 oz 12 ga Brenekke Slug.  When he shot the doe looked at us but didn't move, the only movement was a 3/4" sapling that fell over, cut right in half by the slug.  Deer walked off and my buddy was too dumbfounded to take another shot.  I had no tags left or a gun so that one got away.  It happens and probably happens more often with a scope than with iron sights.  Hope you have better luck on the next shot.

You can't shoot through brush period! The US Army has done tests on bullet deflection vs calibers. They found that even the 50BMG striking a twig 3 feet in front of a target will cause the bullet to miss the target. NO SUCH THING AS A BRUSH GUN! Never do that again!

BluDino,

Just to make you feel better, I'll tell you of my big miss.  Couple of years ago I lined up an "easy" 40-yard shot from my tree stand on a big buck just emerging into an open hay field.  Touched off the shot, and buck nonchalantly looked around for source of the sound, but acted unhurt.  But I had heard a crashing sound with the shot, and heard debris raining onto the ground.  Sure enough, when I took my eye from the scope, I saw I had shattered a tree branch just 2 feet away.  Looking through the scope, I thought I was easily shooting over the top of the branch.  Forgot that with high rings there is a big diff between scope line of sight and line of travel for the bullet, especially that close to the muzzle.  By the time I had gathered my wits and reloaded my gun, the buck had decided to leave the area, and I didn't get another shot at him.

You are all right, there is no magic brush gun. Of all the testing to find a brush-busting rifle, they found that everything deflects when it strikes a branch. Actually, a bigger slug is just a bigger object trying to get between the branches.
Studies have actually shown that a smaller caliber bullet has a better chance of reaching it's target in the brush simply because it can "thread the needle" better. That being said, if it strikes even the tiniest twig, it's path is altered just as any other.
Sorry about the miss! You'll get another chance.

About 3 years ago I shot at a doe at 20 yards with a 12 ga. slug. I was shocked when she ran off. Looked for blood or hair, and found no sign of a hit. Finally traced the path back to where I had shot from and found a twig, couldn't have been more than 1/8" thick, that was blown in two.Just a small twig, but it deflected a one ounce slug enough to cause a miss at short distance.

Even buckshot is said to not be effective when shooting through brush. eddiegjr
