Rooster's Rifle & Deer
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:13:33 AM »
My Grandson Rooster went on his first deer hunt Friday. He was carrying a 357 Ultra Light 357 Max that I built for him. Everything on it came from the GBO classified ads with the exception of the barrel (Numrich). Thanks to all whose accurate descriptions and fair pricing made the little rifle possible and for the FAQ's (A must read and re-read for all).A special thanks to Tim for making the reamer rental program available.
As far as the load goes was not much time to develop a load , I used a 125 gr hp with a 357case, stiff load of H110 powder and went to the range...... sighted in at 25 yards, then moved to 100 yards, was not using a target but was able to hit golf balls and  water bottles, results were dramatic !
Rooster, Josh and I left early Friday morning to a friend's ranch to try it and Josh's new 7mm-08 Savage out. (his commissioning  present for going thru the ranks to become an Officer in the Army).
Rooster had the first shot of course, he settled in after 5 shots and a small scope cut.................. ::) made a nice shot on an 8 point about 75 yards. The results were DRAMATIC
Shooting from a Texas style blind with the deer at an angle to him the bullet took off two antler points, a lung, liver, passed thru the abdomen and exited just above rear leg knee joint. No tracking was necessary  ;D
Josh was up next,Fat doe came in about 300 yards, 1 shot bang flop end of story for the doe. After 3 tours in Iraq he is an excellent shot!

It really suprized me that the 125 gr. HP in the .357 went through that much deer!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Congrats to Rooster. That's a nice buck. ;D
Tell us more about the 357 you built. Did you make a stub barrel for it? You know we need details about it. :D :D

Please do me a personal favor. Give Josh a hug and a THANK YOU from one soldier to another.

Thanks Spanky,
The rifle was stubbed with a 357 bbl .I got the barrel from Numrich  turned it down a little and Stress relieved it, threaded it for the stub, set the headspace then mig welded the barrel to the stub to make sure nothing works loose.Headspace was adjusted by screwing in the barrel with a new case in the chamber until it was touching the face of the receiver. locks up really nice.Stocks are as issued youth synthetic . Scope is a Simmons 2 1/2 power with Ideal eye relief (unless some certain youngster crawls up the stock in the heat of hunting  ;D). It turned out real nice and safe . I proofed it with some MAX loads (way over specs) to make sure all was OK.
Finally got it reamed to 357 Max last weekend but the hunt this weekend was with the 357 mag rounds, after seeing the performance of the 125 gr bullets, do not know if it will see to many Max rounds.

Give that soldier a hug from a sailor.  Congratulations on the deer and more importantly, on the Commission.  I salute you, Lieutenant.  Stay safe and come back to us.  Nail a raghead for me.  I'll buy the ammo and pay for the funeral. ;D
Stay safe, young man.  Just know we appreciate what you're doing, and if they'd let this Old Fart do it, I'd be right there too.

The way things are going in Korea, we'll be there next.

Jeepman,

Rooster is a true hunter now.  Got his first deer and first battle scar (between the eyes)  :D.  Congrats to him on a successful hunt and to Josh for his service to our country!!  God bless him and all others.

Seeing that picture made me miss that country.  I haven't been back there in close to 30 years.   :(

Jeep man I'm puzzled. How does a person shoot OFF 2 points of a rack an still take out the vitals?
Or am I in a stupor an he took a doe.  I'm not even going to

The buck had his head down eating corn around the feeder , fairly common problem when shooting from a tower stand . The shooting angle was as such that it happened to clip the points and still have enough force to enter the vitals and still penetrate. The bullet was a custom made copper jacketed / wheel weight  hollow point. A friend made  them for me about 30 years ago. I have never seen such penetration from another 357 125 gr hp. He was a true craftsman and machinist. He built the dies for forming the jackets to the lead while forming the hollow point at the same time.
