Coyote Vs. Muzzle Loader
« on: November 30, 2010, 01:56:00 AM »
Opening day of the firearms season put me in a ground blind at first light.  The weather was a balmy 55 degreesand getting warmer by the minute.  I knew the day wasnt going to be productive.  I hadnt heard a single gunshot and the clock was getting close to 730AM.  At around 800, here come this coyote working the same tree line that my blind was in  right towards me.  I couldnt resist.  At about 60yds I let him have it with a 295gr Powerbelt HP.  Needless to say, he didnt go anywhere.
It's all a hot mess...........

Good lick there!  I shoot 'em on sight!  If there was a choice between shooting a deer or a yote, the coyote gets the bullet!   ;D  Now I just wish I could stand the smell so's I could get a few pelts...  :(

He won't be comin round your stand no more  ;D ;D

I am mixed on this and have let at least four pass over the years. Figure that if I pop one, I would need to drag it afar quickly but yet would still have a large amount of scent in my patch for a while and our hunting seasons are of short duration day wise.

One year, my partner who was around 1/4 mile to my north east saw a Coyote working the edge and it ended up right at the base of his tree and sat looking up at him. It didn't spook and my friend thought that it really did not know what he was as he remained motionless.

The yote then cut across the corner of woods to rye grass to woods and flushed out five deer that circled back in our direction. We both ended up getting a deer from that bunch so the Coyote helped for once.
I still dont like to see them when hunting deer but figure that a shot fired and the extra scent of a dead one may still be the greater evil???

There is getting to be too many of em for sure though, the part of me that say's shoot the He$$ out of them grows larger all the time so I applaud and congratulate you.

I nailed one last year here in ny with the m/l and it really flattens em,the only thing that moved was his tail went straight up and started going in circles like a woodchuck. I figure once you see a coyote your not going to see any deer for a couple hours so why not shoot em and move on.

Shot one with my 50 a couple years ago and the 385gr. bullet pulled intestines out the rear as it through and through......talk about smell....I want a pelt but I lack the intestinal fortitude to skin one of these stinkers....

Good job Swift......one less pest in the world..
