new gun dream
« on: October 29, 2010, 07:55:04 PM »
I have a remington 700 VTR in .308 of 2007 manufacture with the FIRST x-mark pro trigger, and feel that it is a good rifle..... but I feel like I need another rifle again so here goes!  :o

I am thinking that the weather warrior 116 FHSAK chambered in .270 Win. is the ticket to funville.  accustock and accutrigger, stainless, selective muzzlebreak.  I'm not fond of the hinged floorplate but all else is great.  I suppose I could just forgo the break and get the 116 FCSS with a box mag and it's cheaper too?  Here's the dilemma stopping me though: my starting point is my comfort level/preference with the .308.  If I get higher case capacity but lighter bullets, plus a slightly heavier gun WITH a break then I might actually decrease felt recoil but get a decent velocity gain and better trajectory.  Does the break actually help that much?  I'm just going for whitetail and smaller so I don't need a magnum of any sort.... just faster and flatter shooting than .308 Win.  So to recap is the break worth the price and is .270 pretty good to 300yds concerning terminal performance?  I plan on loading up swift a-frames and using Hybrid 100V by the way.

I am responding to this from my deer staind waiting for legeal light.
The break is effective but redirects the sound and shock wave so more of it comes back to the shooter and bystanders so it seames a lot loadre and you will most defqantly want hearing protection while hunting. A lighter bullet will reduce recoil give a better tridgetory but you are givinr up kenetic energy. Up close thisnt much of a concern but for longer shots it is.  The 308 is a very flat shooting round and the us still uses it as a sniper round that should tell you something.
If you are having troube with recoil first thing to do is get a limbsaver recoil pad installed they do work well and if that doesn't work then try lighter loads and lastly the break

My eyes are messed up from a bomb blast a few years back so looking into a scope (especially looking towards the sun) doesn't allow me to track quickly at all.... so recoil is an issue with a high-powered scope.  Iron sights I can still do... but for the sake or argument I'm talking about a smooth shooting gun that won't rock my eyes out of focus much in-between shots.  In that regard I should probably be asking how smooth the bolt operation is too (when NOT super-clean and freshly oiled-up).

For good deer round that will not rock your world you can try a 243

rock my world...?  I'm saying that if the gun is jumping a bit after the first shot my eyes can't acquire a good sight picture quick enough to pop a deer again before it's run off.  I could just rush the shots BUT I don't take bad shots under any circumstances.  I want something flatter shooting and with more kinetic energy than .308 Win. WITHOUT getting significantly lighter bullets to do the job.  .277 and .284 seem like the ticket, I don't personally feel confident with the 6mm bullets.  6.5mm to .308 seem optimal for my purposes.

Squib,

Just buy a .280 Remington, with hi quality ammo, and you are there. No big mystery.

I don't handload, but if you want a little more oomph than the factory rounds, then just handload them up a bit.

No reason to re-invent the wheel.

Best, Mannyrock
P.S.-  On the other hand, if you love to handload, then just get a new 7mm Mauser, and you are there.

I know little to nothing of mausers.  I hear good things..  :-\

I'm looking at the 116-FHSAK still, also I could go 116-FCSS (same as previous but with a detachable magazine and no muzzlebreak), or even the 111-FCNS which is a blued version of the 116-FCSS.  Then again if I can just not deathgrip the stock to torque it, and not jerk the heavier trigger, I can get an axis?!  The FHSAK is still the dream gun (poor man's standards anyways), though the stainless isn't a HUGE deal to me and neither is the muzzlebreak in all honesty (nice to have, my preference that those options are available but would it really make it shoot any better?).  Is the 111 FCNS the bottom of the line I can get and have a SOLID shooter, or would an edge work.  Above all else I find accuracy rewarding, I can deal with ugly, and getting beat up by a gun if I have too, but it better shoot consistent at 100yds.

Squib,
The 270 Win is an excellent deer round capable of killing deer out to and farther than 400yds. It does shoot much flatter than the 308 Win. I have shot one of the Weather Warriors in 30-06. The brake reduces recoil by about 30%. Remember that you will "feel" a blast from the brake that may affect you more than recoil. I would suggest you get the model with the brake, you could always close it if you don't prefer using it. I think they may even come with a thread protector so you can remove the brake all together and sell it if you don't like it.
As another recommendation, I would consider purchasing a Savage 110 action for a project gun. You could order a barrel in many more calibers than Savage sells and one in particular stands-out as a great deer performer with low recoil. 6.5 x 55 Swede. Trust me, it will get the job done quite nicely. ;)

yeah I like the 6.5 for penetrative power... I don't know about pushing it hard though since the extra bearing surface on a mid-weight bullet would eat up a barrel relatively quick.  6.5-06 is an option for converting a .270 down the road, and I could resize brass too.  I know of a guy that does custom work on savages so I could get him to do it cheap... but I'd prefer to get one more ( :-X supposedly) rifle and just be done with buying new ones.

as for the swede.. not bad but I want speed (I can load lightweight for .308 but then terminal performance at a distance is garbage).

do you all like the accustock?  is it worth the extra $50, or should I just acra-glas a plaino stock down the road if I'm not grouping tight enough?
