Blank slate: What gun and caliber
« on: November 23, 2010, 03:24:28 AM »
A friend wanted my rifle more than I did so I let it go.
Here it is Nov and I need a replacement for coyote.
I have the dies for 22-250 but I'm open to other calibers, smaller and larger.

Please give me some suggestions.

Range will be well under 150 in most cases.

I looked at a nice new Savage 14 and can get it new for $650 and it would be nice to buy American.  But the CZ is nice too.

Throw out some ideas please. Be specific :D ;D

Any happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks.

Getting into calling ranges for sure and as one gets more proficient with the setup and calling, a .22-250 becomes kind of scarry at ranges under 100yds, specially if one is saving the hides.

I have no comment on the rifles but think that even the .22 Hornet would work well as it has recieved good reviews within the said ranges.

For what I call up close and personal, out to 250 yrds, I`m a big fan of the AR. I shoot 55 gr varmint bullets that are very soft and won`t ricochet. Most of the time, unless the bullet is in the chest, you`ll need a second shot, but it`s always ready. For reach out and touch em I have a couple of wildcats in bolt gun set up to shoot out past 700 yrds. For the way you hunt I would recomand the Rock River Coyote model with a 3 1/2 X 10 Leupold VX 3 scope. Ultimate set up for shorter ranges.

.30 cal ball (if legal for you) works well if you hunt for hides(..308,30-06, 7.62X54R...etc)

Savage 17HMR and a VERY good scope.

I'd go with a .223 because of the cost and availability of ammo. I haven't been too impressed with the quality of most newer guns except the last two cz .22 rifles I bought. I was looking into a cz 527 carbine in .223 myself which should make a handy light carbine especially within the ranges you are looking into. I'd mount a small variable scope like a 1-4x and within 200 yds it would be a great calling rig.

je265, You won`t go wrong with the 527. I have one in 204 and it has sold a couple to my firends. Real accurate and the set trigger is great. Mine has the lite weight barrel and shoot groups around 1/2 moa. and less with 32 gr. Sierra`s.
