Who here shoots a H&R trapper, 44 mag?

I have my eye on one, at a local store.  Any info on vel. reduction vs. a 22" barrel?  How are they for fit/finish?  After shooting my son's handi 44 mag, and selling my Marlin 1894 44 mag, this little rifle has me intrigued, for next deer season, here in Indiana.  Any and all input appreciated.  Thanks!

I had my 22" handi 44 mag barrel cut down to 18". Was pretty much the same as a trapper. The short barrels seem to carry better... they're not muzzle heavy like some of the full length barrels. It was louder with the short barrel though.

I also have the SB1 .44 mag. I got it trimmed to 18inches, and I love the handling. I haven't shot it without ear protection, so cannot comment on the loudness. I would definitely have bought the Trapper version if it had been available here in Australia, and saved the cost of recrowning. Someone might come in with the exact velocity loss, but I doubt that it is significant over the ranges that it should be used. I have been very happy with the fit and finish of my 2 H&R rifles. There is plenty of info in the FAQs as to how to get the best out of them. Regards Pete

  All things equil, there is no difference in accuracy as it pertains to barrel length. The only accuracy differences come from sight radius and open sites. If you scope it, its moot.  ;D

None at all. It was just louder.
I'm sure it lost a little velocity but I don't have a chrony so can't say how much.
I don't think a deer would notice the difference. ;D

Several tests have been done with factory 44 mag loads, to see at what barrel length the rounds start to decrease from maximum velocity.  Depending on the test you read you will find that the 44 mag reaches maximum velocity in a barrel length of 16.5 to 17.5 inches.  After that the velocity starts decreasing with friction.   
Put a scope on the shorty and you won't have to worry about site radius. 
I am cutting mine down to 17" soon.

I have a barrel and a receiver on the way and it will be cut down to 16.5" with a barrel band installed for the sling. I have not made up my mind if I will put on a N.E.G. banded front sight or just a low power scope on it. I think it would be the perfect tree stand gun for short range, and go with my S&W 629 really good.

I suggest you look at the .45 Colt carbine before you decide on the trapper. Legal caliber in Indiana, walnut stock, 20" barrel, and I believe it is on the sb-2 frame as opposed the sb-1. ( I may stand corrected on the frame )
