High Power Targets
« on: December 07, 2003, 02:53:37 PM »
I recently got my first AR and am interested in shooting at some longer ranges.  I have a farm with plenty of length for a safe range.  What are the target dimensions for the targets commonly shot from 3-600 yds?  I have a clear shot all the way out to 1400 off the fromt porch of my cabin, but mom doesn't appreciate rifles under the metal roof.......something about the windows rattling, I don't know.....   Any info is appreciated.

I believe the X at 300 is is 3 in. with the black about 24in. across
At 600 the X is 6in. & the black is about 3-4ft, across.
These are not precise measurements. But they are reasonably close.
If I can get the exact dimensions I will post them.

I've never checked to see just what size the black is. Sorry bout that.

Thanks for the info.  I was just thinking of stretching out my rifle(s) once spring gets here.

Howdy tgtsmkr

You're a lucky fella with that much room to play in! To answer the dimensions part, the regular 300 center has an 18" aiming black which includes the 8-ring and higher. All NRA highpower targets (200, 300, 600 and 800) have a six-minute black, give or take an inch or two. So figure the 600 will have a 36" aiming black (7,8,9,10 and X rings). The long range target used at 800, 900 and 1000 has a 45" black. The same target is used at all three distances.

Something to consider if you're shooting alone - how far can you see bullet holes in the black with your spotting scope? Especially .22 holes! For me with a 77mm Kowa, 200 yards is about it. Shooting farther requires either a target puller buddy or a LOT of time spent travelling to the target to look. I get to shoot a lot more if I only shoot 200, even though I have access to longer ranges.

1400 yards with a .223?

Cheers!

300 yard targets:

SR-3 (used for prone rapid fire)

Aiming black:

X      3.00 inches
10     7.00
9      13.00
8      19.00

Rings in White:

7      25.00
6      31.00
5      37.00

Target MR-63  (used to simulate the 600 yard MR-1 target for prone slow fire at 300 yards)

Aiming black:

X     2.85 inches
10    5.85
9     8.85
8     11.85
7     17.85

Rings in white:

6     23.85
5     29.85

600 yard target MR-1 (for prone slow fire aT 600 YARDS)

Aiming black:

X      6.00 inches
10     12.00
9      18.00
8      24.00
7      36.00

Rings in white:

6     48.00
5     60.00

Notes:  The Target, MR is the same as the MR-1 target, except the 7 ring is in the white.  This was the first decimal 600 yard target, adopted about 1965, and was used for 500 and 600 yard firing until about 1981.  At that time, the 7 ring was made black to make the U.S. aiming black more similar to the targets used in International competition.  The unspoken reason was to make the aiming black easier for old geezers to see.  As an old geezer today, I can appreciate that logic.  The MR target is still used for firing at 500 yards, which is usually only done if the range does not have 600 yards, like a lot of old military ranges.

The Target, SR is used for 200 yard firing, standing slow fire and sitting rapid fire.  It is the same as the SR-3 target except that the 8 ring is in the white.  As above, this target was also used for 300 yard prone rapid fire until about 1981, when the 8 ring was made black, for the same rationale as above.

HTH.

Resp'y,
Bob S.

I have no intention of shooting the .223 the full dist. but a friend from MS has an Armalite AR-50 that might get dragged out next spring.  His gunclub might stretch out to 500, so he's itching to get up here to lay it out.  I appreciate all the info.
I am just looking for some informal target shooting and you guys have been GREAT!!

On the target puller, are you talking about someone downrange, in a safe position to check your targets between shots and communicateinfo back to you at the line?

Per-zactly. This is a part of every shooter's participation in any rifle match, actually. For "pasture matches", you would have to find a SAFE position of cover for the spotter and have reliable communication worked out beforehand.

Cheers!
