Hey 44,
Looking at that fine customized 30-30 sure makes a guy wonder why the company doesnt make them that way!..........and looking at the snow sure makes it obvious why you are in Texas now.

The test was to find the ultimate brush buster caliber. A round ball was the king of brush busters. Conical bullets don't bust brush. They deflect. Round balls continued through the test medium and struck the target, Ross Syfried did the test for Guns and Ammo magazine. However th O. P was asking about bullets...

Most 30 caliber bullets are made for the new superdupermach36 30 calibers and just don't work well in the great 30-30. The 30-30 has a much lower velocity. There are some great bullets out there for it. I don't see much real life difference between the 150 and 170 grain bullets. Paper statistics tell a different story. Any way, any bullet from 125 to 200 grains designed for the 30-30 should work well. I like cast bullets better than jacketed.
Lost deer happen. Any hunter knows it can happen and it is unfortunate when it does.
I would bet more North American game animals are killed by the 30-30 than any other caliber.

Sorry about your deer and thankyou for reminding us it happens.
shu, thanks for the info and words of wisdom about losing a wounded deer. It is a humbling experience and kinda leaves you with a hollow feeling in your stomach.

I'm looking to go with the 135 grain SSSP bullets I have and after I finish another hunting trip,(slug gun) I'll get to work on it before the snow impedes my progress. I am going to look into the 150 and 170 grain as well.

the point of a round nose, or even better a blunt nose, is to crush instead of poke.  a 30-30 isn't going really fast OR heavy, but it's got enough of both to do the job.  you place your shot right, use a bullet that will crush instead of poke, and you have a hole in vitals that stays open and is 1/3 of an inch.  can a spitzer do that at slower velocity, yes, but not likely (little holes seal up).  can a 30-30 open up at slower velocity, yes, but not likely very well and it won't be going fast enough to get through much meat if it DOES open up wide.

consider energy dump within 100yds.  do you want the bullet to get caught in the deer and give him a good jolt, or do you want to poke a hole in him reliably?  hydrostatic shock wouldn't be terribly impressive at a distance with a light bullet, but a heavier one with a good MEPLAT would give your target/deer some.... would it get deep enough to shock the vitals though?  a big wound cavity on one side is good, a big wound cavity inside is better.  You research it enough to make sure your bullet can get inside before that blunt tip stops and you're good.

I took that concept a bit too far this season, smashed a deer in one side and up into the armpit of another.  catastrophic damage in a relatively narrow wound channel.  there was hydrostatic shock galore, but it only radiated out 2 inches, and the bullet was a 300grain .458 hp.  a 30-30 would be lighter but longer and have better sectional density to keep pushing, less meplat means less resistance, less mass means less inertia to keep it going though.  it kind of balances out.  less recoil for 30-30, still kills deer.  Mine stiffly walked/trotted about 50yds away after I shot him, looking around the whole time, looking for bedding and cover.  I felt bad and panicky, like I failed horribly.  Once I butchered him I could see he had no chance of living from that shot due to being smashed up so bad but he STILL suffered, had to after moving so far before collapsing.  He suffered less than animals that get butchered and sold to market though, and that hasn't stopped anyone I know from eating meat.  I think you're good- just keep in mind what particular ammo and shot combination your circumstances are hunt to hunt.  Deer die of disease and starvation too, and getting slapped/tagged by vehicles, so guilty conscience aside, it was gonna feel some pain one way or another.  I'm sorry you had to feel that, you're wiser for it now though.

Things happen. That is just the way it is with hunting. Sometimes you will never figure out what went wrong. Take it from a long time bow hunter! I personally use the 130 grain Barnes TTSX bullets in my 30-30 Handi loaded to about 2450 fps. I have shot deer and hogs with it. Never had one run more than fifty, most less than 20. Yet to recover a bullet. Typical. If you are a Barnes X bullet user, and have used them enough to give them a chance, you know what I am talking about.

After initially trying the Hornady 130 spire (#3020, not the pistol bullet) and having it come apart when it hit bone and having to trail a deer for an entire morning, I switched to 125 Ballistic Tips for my NEF .30-30.  A max book load of 3031 listed for the Contender gives me 2673 fps, and from what I can tell, this is an excellent deer bullet at this velocity.  Only two deer have been taken with it so far because I don't always hunt with the .30-30, but no problems with exiting or blood trails.  The longest shot was exactly 100 yds (measured with a rangefinder afterwards) at a doe which weighed 125 if my memory is correct.  The bullet entered just behind one shoulder and exited smack in the middle of the offside shoulder.  She ran about 75 yards through sage, and finding her was no problem.

I'm not a huge fan of Ballistic Tips, but my experience with them in this application has been excellent.

I've had very good results with leverevolution in my marlin 336.  They shoot tighter groups and had to lower crosshairs 2" over the 150 gr softpoints i was using at 100 yards to get same impact.  have killed deer out to 200yards.  Should put leftover 150 and 170 grain softpoints up for sale as i don't use them anymore

I would stick with the 150-170 gr bullets designed for the 30-30.  The 30-30 needs thin jacketed bullets to expand properly.  I've seen alot of deer fall the Core Lokts and power points.

That used to be a problem at the longer ranges when guys loaded bullets intended for the '06 & .308, etc but the factory offerings of better ballistical bullets intended for the 30-30 have the 'thinner' jackets now. In fact, not much has really changed in decades except for the developements in projectiles. The last 10-15yr. have seen huge improvements in them.

I agree with gcrank.  The 125 gr Ballistic Tip and the Sierra Pro Hunter are both designed to work properly at 30-30 velocities even as the range stretches, and they do!  But the other observation is true also, while I have more experience with the factory 150 gr loads, I have never recovered a 30-30 bullet fired into a whitetail.  And while you don't get a 'bang-flop' with a 30-30, it has never been hard to find the deer, usually within 25 to 50 yards.  I'm beginning to think like my father.  After I bought my Savage 99 in .308, he said you don't need anything more than a 30-30 for deer in Michigan.  In fact he used an old 1873 Winchester with a 26" barrel in 32-20 for most of his deer hunting life.  When he moved up to a 30-30, he figured he had the ultimate deer rifle.  My H&R Topper 30-30 is my 'go to' gun for whitetails in Michigan where I have done most all of my hunting.  44 Man

No less a figure, and hunter, than one T. Roosevelt thought the 30-30 'a fine, smallbore express'.
FWIW, deer are tough critters and hit with even '300 somethingbig mags' will often go 25-50 yards before realizing they are dead.
