there is a forum for savage ML.  go and ask them what they think.  Personally I am using Blackhorn 209 and I see no need to go smokeless and buy another gun except the price of the BH209 powder. Put this powder with a Barns solid copper bullet and I cant get a more accurate load with better deer killing potential.

I have a Savage and think it is great.  A lot cleaner and problems like the crud ring eliminated.  Maybe I am lazy but I have shot it the last two years and have not cleaned it.

Savage has quit making the MLII as of October.

I would also consider a smokeless barrel for an Encore.  SMI sells barrels and will also drill and tap a 45-70 factory Encore barrel for a breech plug.

hmm according to some of the supposed experts, the savage was the greatest thing since sliced bread. That surprises me if they had such a gold mine, they are geting out of them.

Both my sons have the Savage smokeless muzzleloaders. They luv 'em and killed lots of deer with 'em. You have to clean it as often as you would an '06. The guns are not idiot proof and loads have to be prepared on a good scale out of the elements. You can't load by volume like BP guns so Savage may be dicontinuing them for liability reasons. Just my 2.

Been shooting my Savage Smokeless for 4 years now, love it...  Don't plan on going back to black powder any time soon. I do have a Omaga with some Blackhorn as a back up gun, but that is what it will remain a back up gun...

I said I was not going to do it, but I ordered another  Model 10 MLII since the are back in production for a limited time.

I wanted a back up rifle.

I've accually come up with  a way to measure my smokess charges by volume that can be done in the feild and in the wind with no issues.  Out of 60 volume fills te biggest variance I've gotten has been +/- .3gr.. What I did was take my clear TC BP horn with smokeless in it and I turned out a alluminum tube that fits up around the "neck" of the horn with a chamber the in the tube the same diameter as the inside of the horn. The down side is it's only good for that horn and that powder ( I use 5744). I've gotten flak for talking about this method but I'm doing it myself and I've tested it quite a bit and it works for me.  As far as the 10ml2 is concerned I was a big tc guy all my live bought a bran new omega after I got rid of my encore (the encore shot good but justhad a few places that yuh just couldn't get clean and it was a pain to clean) The omega had a crap barrel on it and the best I could get it to shooot was about 6moa at 100. The savage shoots great and blows the performance of the BP rifles all to hell which cannot be denied. It costs half as much to shoot. I think the only reason why TC sells so well is they dump so much cash into paying everybody and their brother who hunts on TV to hunt with one. Savage just never really advertised it.

You can use the set of LEE powder dippers to volumetrically measure smokeless after you have weighed out a load and checked to see which dipper to use. I wouldn't trade either of my savages for any two other non-smokeless ML's on the market.

I weigh out 50 charges, at home, and place in 12mm test tubes.

Here are the plastic 12x75mm tubes I spoke of, very useful.

Part of the beauty of the savage is the ability to shoot smokeless. Shoot any corrosive powder and you negate that benefit. One must be careful in the loading of any front stuffer. Maybe some folks like to clean barrels more than I do.
