6.5 Jap conversion

  I have a 6.5 Arasaka that I have rebarreled in 260 Rem. The gun has a manlicher stock and shoots very nice groups. I really like the gun and with the Timney side safty trigger I find it hard to understand why I don't see more of these converted like the Mauser's.
  That being said, the only thing I don't like about the gun is that it cocks on close. I have been told that the Arasaka is close to the same design as the Mauser action.

    What would it take to make the Arasaka cock on open?

The Arisaka is a front lug turn bolt as is the mauser and the extractor is quite similar but after that the changes start. The striker mechanism is very differrent and the safety the rifle was made with is completely different than the flag safety of the mauser. The actions are about as alike as a mauser and a pre-64 M70.. The arisaka is a really strong action. I beleive it was Ackley who tried to test relative strengths of various actions. The Arisaka was either the strongest of very nearly,.,. The early ones were well made and of reasonable quality though the late war efforts were dangerous to fire. Also I have never seen one converted to cock on the opening stoke of the bolt which is sort of a killer for the U.S. market..

I have seen japs converted to cock on opening, dehaas's book makes reference to an article on the conversion, E mail me , outbackengineering@gmail.com, and I will find the magazine issue date for you, but I believe it was in a Rifleman from the 40's or 50's, not sure where it might be archived for print or download, I did know a fella that wound up with a couple hundred jap actions without bolts, and was fitting 03 a3 bolts, they cocke d on opening, looked strange as well!
