284 Win barrel for Savage 99
« on: December 17, 2003, 11:58:18 AM »
I was told Savage made the fine model 99 in a 284 Win.  Does anybody know if I could rebarrel a 300 to 284 without making changes to the receiver?  If so, any thoughts on where to find a barrel?

The overall length will be ok as well as the bolt face they are the same size, any quality barrel maker should be able to sup[ply you with the correct chambering in a new barrel. :D    JIM

Would take a lot of action work (if possible at all) because the 284 is so much wider.  Would have to see if you could even get the magazine parts from Savage whether clip or rotary.  Not sure you would be able to afford any gunsmith who could actually do it.  Would not work out well on a cost /benefit ratio.

Suggest you consider 7mm/08 instead of 284 as less work involved and not much given up in power.. otherwise just look for a used 284,it likely could cost you less than a rework.unless you insist on "Museum"grade. Bought two nice ones in last year below $650.   Goodluck whatever you decide, ------Littlenate

littlenate is right on.  Only way to go.  I forgot about 7-08.  If action is long enough then its just a rebarrel.  Magazine should work.

The sav. 99 was manu 1955-1973 chambered in the 284, and I cant believe that they manufactured a completely different frame to accept the caliber, about the only thing that could be different would be the brass magazine, parts and the barrel of course, I would contact Savage in reguards to finding the internal parts and go from there. :D    JIM

The .284 Win. is one of a very few rebated rim cartridges in existance (the rim is noticeably smaller in diameter than the case body).  Many claim that this type of cartridge design lends itself to feeding jams when the magazine (or clip as in Savage m99C)rails are not perfectly dimensioned.  The purpose of this cartridge was to try to obtain full length cartridge ballistics in a case that would feed through a short action.  The cartridge never saw much interest and now it is very close to extinction.
(from Lyman Manual #47).

NOTE:  If your Savage m99 is a pre one-million s/n, and you have a rotary magazine, it would require some extensive effort to modify the rotary magazine carrier.  The post one-million Savage m99C uses a clip magazine and that is the action built for the .284 Win.  Sounds like the .300sav is still the best bet in my opinion.

I was once interested in doing this same conversion when finding a fine old Savage 99. I was told at that time that the 300 Sav was not strong enough for this but that the 308 version would be,  Dont know how true this was though.
I would just have to ask what you plan to do with a 284 that you could not do with a 7mm/08 in a lever action. Best of luck. POW

certainly the conversion is much easier using 99C (Clip) model, and 308 W as host rifle would probably be most easily (and economically) attainable. If OEM barrel is desired be prepared for sticker shock, --here the 7mm/08 for mdl 99s  is much rarer than 284W.  but my guess is search for new one in either caliber is close to futile and salvaged will still be costly... Note that the most expensive 99's in 284 will not be the clip models(condition being equal) In fact in my exp. they are the cheapest. Should you do the convert as 284, I'd probably be able to come up with an OEM clip for you...... happy hunting----- littlenate
