savage model 170 problems
« on: October 24, 2010, 11:28:09 AM »
I've been working trying to get my brother inlaws rifle in working order. It's a savage model 170 series B in 35rem. It will not feed any ammo I can find reliably. it doble feeds mostly and won't pull rounds from the chamber unless they are fired first. I've had this gun apart a few times trying to figure out what the problem is  with no luck hence the reason why I'm writing this. Anyone have one of these rifles? and had these problems? The one gunsmith my brother in law took it to said it was the nature of this particular beast so I'm hoping he was wrong and I can get a answer on here. Because trying to get  him to part with the rifle would be quite a act. Thanks for any advice.

I would try a different gunsmith.

I've found over the years when a "gunsmith" makes a comment like that it usually means he doesn't know how to fix the problem.

Most guns have little quirks, or certain problems that occur more often than others.  Most knowledgeable gunsmiths are aware of these idiosyncracies and know how to repair them.  I'm sure if you can locate a gunsmith worthy of the name he will figure out how to fix it.

Good luck.

I've got one in .30-30 that also won't feed..I think it's a chronic problem with them...they either work great for their lifetime or stop working. The mechanism is a little fragile in my opinion for a pump gun....

I've thought about parting mine out since I cannot figure it out after replacing multiple parts.
