Your Experience with Aguila ammo
« on: December 06, 2003, 12:12:45 PM »
Last year I bought a carton of Aguila standard velocity ammo. In it's price range, some of the most accurate 22rf ammo I've shot. The reason I haven't bought more is it all had hard drips of wax on the cases.

Was this just an isolated problem with this particular lot? Or is that typical?

I wiped it off the best I could but still caused extraction problems with my 61 Winchester. No problem with my Remington 241's or Colt Woodman Match Target.

Except for those drips of wax I really liked it. (does have a funky, sweet smell when fired). If this wasn't a typical problem with Aguila I would like to buy some more, a couple of cases.

I've fired a little of it from time to time and several guys in the club like it. I haven't heard anyone cuss it. The wax on the cases is a new one on me. The smell is the priming compound.

I have shot the hyper velocity out of a pistol before...the pistol wasn't a high quality firearm.  The guy said that this was the only ammo that will feed smoothly from that gun.  It is a pretty good performer from what i could tell.
I would buy it but I can't find it around here.

None of the gunshops around here stock it either. But my brother visits Medford, Oregon and there is a shop there that stocks it. Perhaps I'll have him pick up a couple cartons and try it again.

Seems like I recall reading on the box it was Ely primed. I thought maybe they were using left over agave fibers from making tequilla to make their powder!!  :)

I compete in Lever Action small bore and have seemed to hit a plateau. Most of my misses seem to be within an inch. I'm shooting Federal America Eagle now. Would like to think I have reached the potential of that rifle/ammo equation.  I know the Aguila groups better out of that rifle. Figure I might be able to pick up a couple of more rams and turkeys. I would like to get my Grand Slam pin this year.

Am going to try some Federal Gold Medal Target and Match ammo for 100m groups this week end. Haven't tried either of those before. I have been doing my ammo testing at 50m. Thought I better try at 100m since that is the ram distance where I'm having my most inconsistent results.

It is not at all unusual for a particular ammo to shoot well at 50 and fall apart at 100. Some even shoot well at 100 yards but won't group at 100 meters!
To get off that plateau, all you have to do is make practice a daily exercise. If you can't dry fire or shoot airgun, just pick up the rifle and get into position every day. Good luck and good shooting.

I shoot Aguilla almost exclusively. The 60 grain SSS
is my favorite .22 round bar none!
They do go a little heavy on the Waxy Bullet lube
but I have never had it cause any problems.
I rarely use semi-auto .22 firearms though.
I wish the Super-Maximum was a bit more accurate,
Because it is the "Second" most explosive .22 Lr
I have ever seen on "Varmints" inside of 100 meters.
(The most explosive I have seen is the CCI "Quick-Shock").
In my opinion, Aguila is second only to CCI in quality
& performance.

I bought 2 bricks of super se from cabelas about 2 years and shot my best
groups ever. I have a target glued to my tying room wall that measures
.280 center to center of a 5 shot group. I have 1 brick left that I am hoarding until I can find some more. cabelas only stocks the hyper velocity stuff now.  the rifle is a rem. 581 left hand that I've been shooting for about 25 years now.

I bought a couple of boxes of their ammo for accuracy testing in my different 22s and it does ok, but none of my 22s really liked it that well. I noticed in the T/C, it left more residue in the barrel than anyother ammo. That made me decide against getting anymore.
