6.5 jap question

hey guys and gals have any of you had problems with graf brass mine will not go in the shellholder for my 6.5 jap(lee shellholder) i was wondering if i need a different shellholder the 308 shellholder seems to fit but it is for my priming tool not the press.  Also what kinda of bullets do you guys think i need to start with i've heard everything from 120 grains up to 160 grains.  i think since im starting out reloading how about the middle at 140 grains what do you guys think about the rem bulk bullets.  i know this is a lot of questions and i thank you all in advance.  just trying to get an idea where to start.  I'm leaning toward H380 for powder its kinda of middle of the road for the bullet weights in performance want to start safe then work up or down from their. :)  thanks again

I don't know anything about the 6.5 Jap, but use Rem bulk 140 grainers in my 6.5x55 and my boy's .260.  Very good results.  I try the rem bulk bullets whenever I can, and have never been disappointed!

not sure about the brass and shell holder. I use Norma brass and RCBS shell holder for the 6.5 Jap.
I use 140 grn Hornady in mine and they shoot well.
I think 140 grn anything is a good size for this caliber.
I am not at home right now so I cannot look it up but I think I use IMR 4064. 
I always go with the low to medium loads, no reason to abuse the rifle or yourself.
If you are going to hunt with it, the deer doesn't care if the bullet is 100ft per/sec slow.
of course start low and look for pressure signs.

6.5X50 Jap takes a Redding #4 produce 606-023 or a Lee #10 produce #857-158

IMR4895 or IMR4064 appear to be good choices.

I think that is a tough shell holder to find at your local store.  I would call and order directly from the manufacture.

I know a gunsmith who has reamed the chamber of the 6.5 jap to 6.5x55 on a lot of rifles.  It didn't seem to be very complicated because he could do it in a few minutes.   The swede brass was cheaper and more common in our area.

He is Ray Jolly,  J&R Firearms, Heber Springs, AR.   I haven't seen him for about five years but an old business card of his has this # (501) 362-2225.   I always figured if got a 6.5 Jap, I would take it to him.

Lyman X2 shell holder is the proper size. This is one of my
favorite cartridges to load for. I would love to have a modern rifle
chambered for this cartridge.

I make 6.5 Jap brasss from 220 Swift. Run thur 6,5 Jap sizer  tim neck and you got it(Well alittle more than that) I Handload 160 g cast (Lee custom) wit n a mild load of 4759 powder. for a nice plinker 1500 fps

The twist on the 6.5 Jap is 1:9 and on the 6.5 Swede it is 1:7.5.  I really wouldn't bother rechambering.  I would just stock up on the correct brass and shell holders.  I found a similar situation with 8mm Sellier and Bellot brass, made to european specs and trying to reload using American shell holders, so I just purchased a whole bunch of Remington brass and I'm good with it.  In your case you just need the right shell holder.

Bullets for the 6.5 Jap run at .264 and Hornady and Sierra make good slugs for the bore.  Good hunting loads for that bore use 120 - 140 gn bullets and 160 gn rn slugs are available for mil-spec.  Remington bulk bullets are as good as anything else.  3031, 4895, 4064, all good powder choices. 

The Arisaka is a very strong rifle and you should not have any problems whatsoever with any load.  Be safe, and have fun............

I like the Privi Partisan 139 gr bullets Either FMJ or SPBT from Graf & Sons (web page on the internet).  The SPBT are presently available and in stock for $19.99 per 100 bullets. They have low cost shipping/handling & insurance. They also have Privi Partisan 6.5 Japanese Brass at a good price.  The 6.5 bullets mentioned above (that seem to have thick heavy jackets) are the only bullets that will perform well in my rifle.
