New 45/70 TALO "Trapper"
« on: December 11, 2010, 02:27:56 AM »
I HAD to have one.I like my regular 45/70 Handi but the trapper was a gotta have.I have had a lot of Handi rifles and I found that the most consistently accurate one was a 45/70.I ordered it and when it came in I was really pleased with the neat size of the overall package. The 18-3/4" barrel looked good in proportion.Several days later I was in low country South Carolina hunting with a buddy for a few days.I hadn't yet had the opportunity to shoot the trapper but did take it with me.After coming in from hunting we set up a target at about 60 yards. With my 300 grain handloads it shot a bit high but one rear sight adjustment made it right. Some Handis are for whatever reason just not accurate but this one is super accurate which made me feel great.I had had some doubts in the back of my mind concerning the short barrel. My buddie's 11 year old son wanted to shoot it so I set up a half gallon milk jug full of frozen water from my cooler and let him shoot that. The impact just literally tore the jug apart. The youngster was just grinning from ear to ear.(Another young convert)This rifle is a really accurate and easy to carry package and just a delight to shoot.I took it with me the next day to a ground blind in some pines as a back-up to my .44 magnum handgun.I saw nothing worthy of shooting but did get some good impressions as to how handy this short rifle was to carry.
Bottom line is that it is definitely a keeper.I recommend the Trapper series if you want a light powerful easy to carry rifle.

Outstanding, but everyone knows it is the 45-70 that does all. Relagate that 44 to something useful like maybe a plow handle. Just kidding.
I have been looking at the same 45 70 also, I think the good Lord intended for us all to have several 45-70s.
Congrats on the great find and purchase.
