What's Your Catch Look Like So Far?
« on: November 13, 2003, 03:57:37 PM »
Besides You Joe. :-D

What does yours look like. As of now mine is just that black coyote and two coons. We had a huge rain yesterday which put all my traps under deep water and out of working order except for one snare. I plan to get my line going again this Saturday. What does yal's catch look like so far?

Good Luck,
Zach Ellis

Zach, the cold put me out of commission after 3 days--so only 130 rats a few coon and a beaver were taken.
Warmer weather is in the offing so my buddy mike are going to be using the canoe to break ice tomorrow.while it will slow setting down considerably we are going ratting once again. The weather should cooperate with no ice once we get things broken open.   Tom

Well my numbers are going up slowly but surely. So far I have 3 coyotes and 5 coons. I also shot a possum while running my traps. Hell, if I can't catch one to skin I'll shoot one and I did skin him by the way. He was 25 inches from nose to base of tail. I guess that is a jumbo.

Not to bad since im 16, but still havening trouble on coyotes cant seem to figure them out i only got one last year But, bye some luck. Well gtg if u guys have any answers to this maybe u can email me some stuff to help me out on my coyote hunt.

Hunterboy: I am also 16 years old, but sounds like you are doing a lot better than me. I have got 6 coons, 4 coyotes, and 3 possums this year. I have caught all my coyotes in snares. I don't know whats legal in your state, but I snare all my coyotes in trails going through fences. Some people steer clear of fence trails to avoid domestic animals. Here in KY we are limited to non-locking snares, so none of my aniamls are ever dead when I get there. I release all non-target catches unharmed.

I have tried my luck at catching a coyote in a foothold, but am also having trouble. I have had a few pull-outs, but no good connections yet with a footheld canine. All I have read is to keep everything clean and scent-free. Bed your trap with no tip or wobble. The main thing is location. Two tracks, intersections of fences, etc. are good locations for canines. Like I said I have never caught a coyote in a foothold, but this is what I have been taught.

Good Luck,
Zach Ellis

I just put all my traps out today, so I won't be back out until Saturday to check on them.

I'm curious as to why some of you trap rats for? Is there a reason to trapping these rats, or are they just accidental animals/rodents captured?

Also, you have a picture on that black coyote? That would be an awesome pelt! I'd make a rug on that hide.

Moose , rats are about the easiest and most abundant .If you can pick up 10 rats a day ( some guys do alot more than that ) and can avg. $3 a rat , thats $30 . You can easily pay for you gas trapping rats . You may as well mix that with a beaver or coon line .

My season is really crappy this year . I am usually laid off by now and have time to trap . I have only had time to maintain about 15 to 20 sets due to my time , or lack of . I go to work at 6:30 and get home between 7 and 9 every nite . That sucks  :x  !!! Starting today , I'm off till Wed. and plan to get a bunch of sets in . I usually run between 50 and 75 sets , but dont look like its gonna happen this year .

When we say "rats" we mean "muskrats".

Where they exist they are a prolific furbearer and are worth $2-4 each. Easy to catch and they are what many water trappers start their trapping with.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't think of muskrats when the word "rats" was mentioned. I was thinking of the rodent-type rat.  :) Dumb me.

I'd like to get some muskrats myself this year. Would be cool. I'm hoping to get a lot of coyotes and wolves this year, though.

I do have pics of the black coyote, but don't know how to post em. I guess you have to have a scanner or something.
