Experience With 30-06?
« on: December 02, 2010, 04:53:33 AM »
I'm contemplating a Handi in a center fire caliber other that my .44 and .357. I already have dies & components for 30-06, and would like to get some input from those who have experience with the Handi in this caliber.

Thanks.

Do it.... The 06 is one of my better shooters. It likes the 165 gr loads. You won't be sorry.

+1 on what Jim said, I have two of em, top target is 200gr NP handloads in my Ultracomp, bottom two are Mac's targets shot for a postal shoot with the same rifle before I bought it from him, I have a stainless also, it shoots the Fusion into 1¼", all targets shot at 100yds.

I just fitted an -06 barrel to a receiver I had that has a .223 ultralight barrel also. I am using 165 grain flat base bullets from Speer and Hornady to work up loads for this rifle this morning. Hopefully I'll get the chrony set up and be able to shoot today or Friday. This rifle has a Redfield Revolution 2-7x33mm accurange scope so this will be a fun experiment. I'll try and post the results later.

Thanks. Now I need help with a related issue: How do I persuade the wife that I "need" this? I guess that I could show her the bullets, dies and brass that I have no gun for, but not sure she'll buy it! Suggestions?  :)

I bought an ultra comp years ago, it wAs a very good shooter. I gave it to a good friends son as his first deer rifle. I wasn't a fan of the comp but the barrel shot a couple different loads very well.

The ol' '06 is a very easy caliber to justify. In the hands of an experienced hunter, It will quite literally do it all. Now in your case this could easily backfire and undermine future purchases as you could load the 06 to do about any new chambering would do for ya.

It's about as American as apple pie and baseball.

Or just leave with an empty gun case and return with a full one. ;) a little underhanded, if this bothers you do something nice for momma afterwards.

Good luck,

I said it before and I'll say it again... the 30-06 is the best cartridge to ever wear a headstamp.
Like Brian says... it'll do it all. ;)

Hey parson, tell the wife you need a Handi with more range than the pistol cartridge guns you have and that you already have all the loading equipment for the 30-06.
On the other hand I liked CW's idea of leaving with an empty gun case and returning with a gun. ;D

My 30-06 Handi is a good shooter and it's the one I have the most confidence in.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I'd say it does!  Can it teach my .280 to talk like that?

OK, I thought that I had my mind made up, but I can't help looking at that BC .45 that CDNN has. I believe that I'm gonna have to order one of those and perhaps have a 30-06 barrel fitted to it later on.

They are on SB2 frames aren't they?

Yes, the Colt carbine comes on an SB2 frame.

You could buy a new 30-06 Handi and switch out the stocks to a set of BC stocks. Then you'd have the BC looks with the 06 barrel. ;D
If you already have a 44 mag then a 45 colt is kind of redundant. :-\
Just my 2 cents.

FUNNY  how they are all slightly different     MY 06 barrelled handi    is a sub minute  of angle gun   with several different  180 and 200 grain bullets     It is one of the most accurate guns I own    BUT it wont shoot    any thing less than 180s  into any thing less than a bath tub at 50 yds   I LIKE  the 180s   so NO PROBLEM  ;D

Since the 1:10" twist works well with 150-250gr bullets, and usually the heavier, longer bullets are the most troublesome, perhaps your bore is slightly oversize and the longer bearing surface makes a difference in bullet engagement in the rifling. For example, I have a 24" fluted 270 Win bull barrel that is very overbore at .2795", I can shoot .284" bullets in it!! Have you slugged the bore by any chance?

My go to gun is my Handi 30-06.  I carry this gun 90% of the time.  It was my first handi, and the one that convinced me to get more.  I shoot everything from Speer 100gr Plinkers, to Nosler 200 Partitions.  My favorite bullets are:  Speer 125gr TNTs,  Sierria 165gr HPBT, and the Nosler 180gr Partition.  I never shoot for measured groups, I shoot to hit a 4" clay target.  The Speer 125s are good out to 300 yards.  The Sierria 165s are good out to 500 yards.  The Nosler 180s can hit a gallon milk jug at 700 with no problem.

I've taken Wolves Moose and Caribou with it, and not a single animal lost.  While I can hit at 700 yards I limit my shots to 500 or less.  Bullet performance is not real good beyond 500 yards.

Whatever you do, if you try to sneak one in the house make sure you burn the box. My wife can't tell one handi from another but she can some how tell when there's a new box around.

I have a shelf hanging from the ceiling of the garage.  I breakdown the boxes and fold them flat.  Then keep them on that shelf.  I've got about 30 boxes up there and the wife never notices a new one since they are flat.

In my house it's not an issue anyway, she brings home near as many as I do.  The wife owns far more pistols than I do.

Get the 30-06.  My Handi 30-06 is one of the most accurate rifle (be it Handi or not) that I own.

The way I handle the "Mommy" question is that I offer to buy her something that costs as much at the new rifle, barrel, whatever.   Yes, I know that the rifle, barrel, whatever costs me twice what the actual purchase price is, but what is domestic tranquility worth?

Plus, I get points for being a good guy and she brags to her girlfriends and they are jealous.

Win - win all around.

This one I want to but I'll need a break on mine. I need neck surgery on bulging disks and will break all my rifle 308 and above from now on. I love my 06 but it's getting a break on it as we speak.  Good luck. Jess

Tell the wife that a new 30-06 would motivate you to do more around the house and help out.......let me know if that works out because I've got to get a .280 Remington into the inventory real soon....Santa's probably not going to come through for me as I'VE BEEN BAD this year, REAL BAD  :'(
