308 + cast bullets
« on: December 10, 2010, 02:34:50 AM »
Took my rifle to the range yesterday with some cast bullet loads, hoping for a bit of luck.   The rifle is comprised of a 308 barrel bought from this site and one of the Remington made guns, was origionally one of the thumbhole stocked guns in 45-70.  The 308 barrel would never lock up on the other receivers, too tight, and all the barrels I have were too loose on this action, so put the 308 barrel on and locked up great.

Tried "the load" of 13 gr Red dot and not too bad with the Lyman 311284 bullet, but yesterday was using 4759 instead.  Top target is a bullet from a Lee group buy mould, about 190 gr., velocity 1850 fps.  Second target was the 311284 bullet @1758fps.   The "flyers" were called pulls.  fingers kind of numb from the cold and I was in a hurry to get warm.  Knew it when the trigger broke that it would be out of the group.   This thing looks like it really wants to shoot.

I have a short barrel 308 that loves the 311440.  Seat them out to just touch the lands, 5744 powder, and she shoots really well.  I don't have my load notes, so I don't remember the charge.  Haven't got to pop bambi with it, but it vaporizes water bottles and the like.  The flat pointed bullet just looks like it wants to thump something, and the 308 is turning out to be a great cast bullet caliber.

Mostly cast bullets is what Ive been shooting for years now; I really like them. Make sure you clean the jacketed fouling out before using them though and it should get even better.
BTW, that load is about what the original 30-30 was. T. Roosevelt thought it a "fine smallbore express" and used it to good effect in Africa on smaller game. It will do the same today in a .308 or 30-06 case.

Yup, scrubbed the copper out first, SOP.   I have one of the 311440 moulds too, plan on working with that also, and the Ranch Dog 311-115.   Thanks, will also try some 5744 too.
