Ok- so which Excalibur do I want to get?
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:48:55 AM »
I have a 20 plus year old horton hunter and am looking at a new crossbow... I think I want to try recurve this time and Excalibur at that. Trouble is which one do I need? I don't think I need the fanciest but don't need the baby one either although it would be faster/better than the old hunter ;)

I am thinkin exocet but maybe a thumbhole- Do I need a 225 lb bow? ARGH!

I guess if I find the right deal the exact model won't make the big difference.

so which would ya get over the others?

Ck on the Excalibur forum for lots of experience on these xbows. I don't think you need a 225 pounder.  I have the Exocet at 200 pounds and I don't know as I need that much.  My hunting ranges have not increased.  The doe I took last year was 17 yds.   I think that is more common than not.  Xbows are not long range weapons like some would like to infer.

I have the exocet 200 as well, for several years, and it has performed fine.  Shooting carbon arrows, 125 gr Muzzys, it goes just slightly less than 300 fps.  This is more than sufficient.  Recently killed a small doe, 15 yd shot,  thru the ribs and then angled into the shoulder.  It broke the bone and completely exited.  Upon dressing the deer, it remined me of a rifle shot with all the red jelly.  Wasted about half that shoulder.
The exocet 200, as any recurve crossbow, is wide, but I really like it.
Best of luck,

You guys told me what I was already thinkin. Even their lightest bow bags plenty of deeer and I hear holds the record moose in ontario... I was/am thinkin one of the 175/200 lb bows but I am big enough that if the right deal  comes around ANY of them will work.

Thanks
