Gas checked and plain base in the same mould?
« on: January 01, 2004, 01:44:41 PM »
Veral,

Will you permit the ordering of a gas checked and plain based cavity in a 2 or 4 cavity mould - same size bullet?

While I am asking - how about 2 different weights of the same diameter bullet in the same mould?

Thanks in advance.............statie

Sorry, but I cannot afford to make two different cuts in one mold with one exception.   I will cut a bullet and softnose in the same mold at the standard price.  But be sure you really want it.  That makes it a single cavity mold, and I find that few casters like them.  I personally will not have a mold with two different bullets because I'll like one better than the other, yet be forced to cast a bunch of bullets I don't want or keep lead out of the unwanted hole.

Gas checked and plain base in the same mould

Thanks for the reply. I was figuring on the .452 340 grain for use in the Ruger SRH 454. Thought it would be nice to gas check them for over 1400fps and plain base for slower. Guess I'll just have to order with the gas check and try accuracy without installing the check Or I could quit being so cheap and just shoot them all with the check.

I take it by your offerings that 340 grain is the maximum weight recommended and that not much is to be gained by exceeding it, say to the 360 grain that is often mentioned. (I know the 340 at 1200 will take probably anything - but always looking for the biggest/baddest)

I will be ordering your book so I'll probably get a different perspective after reading it

Thanks....statie

If when you order, you specify that you want to try shooting without the gas checks on, I'll cut the check shank just long enough to hold the checks properly.  Sometimes heavy bullets set up like this will outshoot plainbased if the check shank is left full of lubricant.

With a 340 gr I'd guess you'd have a 90% chance of liking it, but only testing will proove it.  Of coarse, it WILL shoot accruately with gc's so you can't actually lose.    Heavier will not hit harder, nor kill as well as this weight.  In fact a 320 gr probably would be the superior killer, due to higher velocity potential, which makes the wound diameter larger, producing faster leakage of red liquid.
