H4895 and the 60% of max load rule on 458 Win.
« on: November 17, 2010, 12:07:49 PM »
I read the webpage from Hodgdon saying you could reduce H4895 loads to 60% of a listed maximum load and end up safely in the 1500 to 2100 fps range.  If they had not have published it, I would have thought it unsafe.

Anyway, my question is, does anyone know if this rule also applies also to big cases like the 458 Win. Mag or 45-70?

It states it only works where H4895 is listed meaning only for cartridges they list H4895 data for, H4895 is listed for some bullets for both of those cartridges.

Can't say, but check out IMR SR-4759:

http://www.chuckhawks.com/reduced_recoil_reloads.htm

I've used it for 30-30's that shoot like a 22LR and 30-06's that shoots like a 30-30.
It lists 458 Win.

Yes, you just have to see if Hodgdon lists data for that cartridge with H-4895. Then go from there.

If they don't list data for it for a particular load you wish to attempt, how would you know what to take 60% of?...

That sort of goes without saying doesn't it?...

No, there might have been other sources of H4895 loads than Hodgdon.

However, Hodgdon says the rule is correct for all H4895 max load they listed.

But I wonder about accuracy in the reduced loads - does anyone have any info here?

I load the 7mm Remington mag reduced loads and they work just fine in fact they are almost the same as the 7x57 If I remember the 7x57 is 40 grns with a 120 grn bullet and the reduced load is 41 grns with 120 grn bullet They also list a reduced load for the 7x57 which I think is 35 grns with 120 grn bullet but all their reduced loads are for H4895 powder.

My reduced 30-06 load (using IMR SR-4759) is as accurate as my best standard load.  It allows me to shoot a 125 gr bullet at reduced recoil, but at the same speed and POA as a 180 gr, so I don't have to mess with the scope.

I have also had very good luck with the 4759 for reduced loads

Reduced loads may or may not shoot as good as your full loads. There is no reason why you couldn't work up from the 60% loads in small steps to find a good load or 'til your shoulder gives out :D

True.  Thanks.  Since then, I have had success with reduced H4895 loads, and with SR4759.  I stayed above the minimum Hodgdon called for.  Not all loadings in the range were equally as accurate, as might be expected.
