Where do you by BP?
« on: December 13, 2010, 06:21:27 AM »
I can't find any true black powder locally. None of the gun stores I've talked to have true black powder and I've read that I should only use true BP. I've seen a few places online but I don't need 5+ pounds.

So where do you buy yours? Do I just need to keep checking gun stores?
Thanks,
Stuart

Check in the stickys, there are some suppliers there.  Our unit gets powder from Coonies, Powders Inc, or Jacks Powder Keg.

They will all, after I fill out their forms showing that I am indeed over 21, ship cases directly to my door.  In California no less.

When you need something for cannon shooting the best first place to always look is our Sticky at the top of this forum called Blackpowder Cannons links list

In that post you will find a listing of powder suppliers.  Those supplier can ship black powder direct to you.  If you check the prices all are right around the same.  It may appear that  Powder Inc, prices a very high.  Powder Inc's prices include shipping and haz mat fee, the other don't.

Thanks! I thought that it was in one of the stickys but I must have skipped over it.
Thanks again,

Keep in mind, hazmat fees will make it pricey unless you buy 5lb+.  What state are you in?  If there's a Bass Pro Shop in your area, they carry it, but you usually have to ask.  Other places may also have it, but won't keep it on the shelves.

If you're near people that do reenactments or other board members, perhaps you can split an order?

It is my understanding that the price for a 25lbs shipment of BP is going up $40 at the first of the year.  You might want to get your order in now.

Also, if you only need a pound or two now and then, see if you can hook up with some active reenactors in your area and piggy back onto someone elses order.

Artilleryman - is that $40 increase in the actual powder, or in shipping or hazmat fees?  And, if in the powder, from whom?

It supposedly is shipping and hazmat fees.  Got the information from an ACWSA member in Wisconsin about GOEX powder.  Don't know what supplier they are using over there.  Since GOEX suppliers are fairly competitive in price I am assuming that they will all be increasing their prices.

Here is from the Powder Inc. site:

Quote
November 17, 2010. PRICE INCREASE
Due to price increases from GOEX and freight carriers, effective January 3, 2011, there will be a .40 cents per pound price increase on our DELIVERED price of GOEX Black Powders. Any orders placed on our online store during our Christmas closing before January 3, 2011 will be priced at the old pricing.

So that is $10/case.  That should include:

Package

UPS Ground services will increase a net 4.9% through a combination of a 5.9% increase in rates and a 1% reduction in the UPS Ground services fuel surcharge.

So, not too bad, really.

I have been using Powder Inc.  I think he will sell you a single one pound can of powder.  It's just more expensive with the Hazmat fee.  That's why he has the 5 pound minimum.

Hazmat fee would be the same for 1 can or 50.  Shipping would vary.

But I beleive they are stuck with 5 lbs minumum as that is the smallest shipping container that is available to lawfully ship the powder..
