Not trying to stir things up nomosendero, but I see your point.  Just sharing my personal experience.  :) I used starline brass and a compressed load to achieve the highest velocities.  I roll with the .500 now though.  Big 610gr cast at 1425 packs quite a wallop on a whitetail.  Velocity is not where its at for me anymore.  I prefer to chunk bowling balls! ;)

I put down a cow with a broken leg with the 45-70 405 cowboy load...went in one side and exited 4 feet down on the other.  How much penetration do we need out of these handi's?  And the 50 S&W?  Oh, my!
Life is short and hard, fun seems optional and I have chosen to enjoy the years I have left at every opportunity. God is good, all the time.

I've confirmed that the 500S&W is still available, Ilion has about 3 dozen accessory barrels in stock.  ;)

I've heard that the Handi 45-70 is so powerful, all you have to do is wave it at the deer and they faint at the sight of one

That's right, and have you heard of the .45-70's amazing penetration. A buddy of mine (actually his buddy's buddy's buddy) once dropped and 18-point buck in its tracks after shooting through 30 yards of brush and two oak trees. Oh, and that was after the bullet ricocheted off a boulder (which it cracked in half, of course).

That was my cousin's cousin's step father once removed. I heard it was a 22 pt buck, that weighed at least 500 lbs, only had 3 legs, and the bullet went in its rear hoof as it was scratching itself and came out the eye complete with half a lung and the heart. Ripped the skin right off too, they didn't even have to field dress it. Didn't spoil one bit of meat either. ;D

Some brave souls have ventured forth into the rarified air, defied the conventional wisdom and got away with it. Others, who blindly follow in their footsteps may 'eat the gun'.
