« on: December 22, 2010, 10:56:42 AM »
Hi everyone i know it's been awile, but working 80 to 90 hrs. a week all year and having back surgery a couple weeks ago i have kinda been out of it hope to get to shoot a little more this year. Well any way i was thinking the other day some one said on here one time about making penetrating oil i did a search on it and could'nt find anything on it. Seems like it was Transmission fluid and accephate and something else. Can someone help me? Thanks

Ed's Red (a homebrew gun solvent, lubricant, preservative formulated by C. E. Harris, one-time resident guru for the American Rifleman, is a mixture of ATF, acetone, mineral spirits and lanolin.  So 50-50 ATF and acetone would probably make a good penetrating oil.

The 50 /50  ATF and Acetone  is as good as it gets . Problem is a container  to hold it .(some plastics melt )
Needs to be re-mixed as it separates .  Have used it here on the farm for some tough rust jobs and it works !

Metal cans are best.  The old bottle shaped Olin powder cans would be good.  (Never throw anything away.   ;D)
