223 AI

I have a H&R 223 that id like to get reamed to AI. Its the heavy barrel model. We dont have any local Gunsmiths here so Id have to send it out anyway. Anyone here up to the job?

Rent the reamer ad do it yourself?

It's a pretty minor material removal, from what I've heard.

 Wayne York is one gun smith that is referred to here quite frequently. He has done several barrel mods for people on the site.

 I have not done the AI on my .223 yet. But from what I have read it is not that hard.

I've done two Ackley's by hand, a 30-30 and a 270, both were relatively easy, but if you're not the DIY type, I highly recommend site sponsor Wayne York of Oregunsmithing, he's done a bunch of rechambers and rebores for myself and many, many members here including Graybeard.   You won't end up with a 223 Ackley that factory ammo can be used because the barrel can't be set back unless the barrel is cut back first and then fitted to another frame or shimmed and fitted. What you'll have is a 223 Improved that will require fire forming either by seating bullets big enough to seat hard into the lands which will be required on a long throated 223, or forming a false shoulder to eliminate the extreme head space as a result of the rechamber.

Thanks all for the info. I dont want to try it myself so I will contact Wayne and see what he can do. I was wishing I could still shoot standard 223s in it to fireform as I have quite a lot of factory loads. Ill let you all know what Wayne comes up with. Thanks again.

How much of a difference is there between the 223 and the 223 improved? Is there a significant gain in fps or is it about accuracy or ?? 
I don't know much about improved chamberings.

The biggest gains by improving a chambering are in cases that have a lot of taper like the 6.5x55 and 30-40 Krag. 4D used to have a chart on their website that showed the percentage gain, but I can't find it now.

You could with a true AI chamber, but you won't have a true AI chamber by reaming a .223 chamber in a single shot unless you could set it back like Tim mentioned.

There are other options to achieve a true Ackley chamber in a fixed barrel, a 22 Hornet barrel could be rechambered to 223 AI for example.
