Model 83 .454 Casull cylinder play?
« on: December 21, 2010, 10:58:04 AM »
Hi Folks,
My nice 7inch M83 .454 Casull does have Cylinder for and aft play, minimal but tangible, after only max. 400 rounds? Has someone experienced this, too? Does it get worse?
Thanks and ex ante "merry christmas" to you all reading...

yup, i've had 3 83 454's and they all are varying amounts of tight, the latest is a bank vault, the first almost that way and a 6" has noticeably more play, none is more accurate than the other.  and yes it's fairly typical.  some will some won't but it won't matter at that small level.  still prolly tighter than any other brand.  if it shoots good then forget it.
a gun owner that votes dem is an oxymoron with the emphasis on moron.

Thanks for the info,

Indeed it is superbly accurate.
I just wanted to know if it's common, cause i plan to shoot it alot more :-)

Therefore i have now decided to go to reduced loads and had a first run with 20-22 grains of Accurate Nr.9 as indicated in the F.A. reloading table, however with the Speer 300 gr Plated SP.
Will post results if someone is interested ?
Next try will be with the Sierra 300 gr .4515 bullet who's specially made for the .454.

Enjoy yours,

Always put a small drop of oil on the cylinder ratchet and another on the boss on the front of the cylinder where it bears against the frame. The oil will help cushion the jarring effects of the recoil.

I've had my 454 for about 10 years, and it shows a little cylinder play.  Still shoots as accurately as ever, so I don't worry about it.  Like Ken suggests, I put a little dab of Tetra gun grease on the ratchet and the front of the cylinder.  That seems to keep movement to a minimum.

Thanks again,
I thought of grease, too.
Happen to have the Tetra Gun grease and SigSauer Hight Tech grease.
It's not as if i didn't put oil on the weapon, a slight film but not extra oil on the ratchet and cylinder front. Even though the end-shake is very little, i think i could have minimize it doing so from the beginning. Dumb me...

one of the most consistantly accurate sixguns i ever owned was a ruger 44 mag vaquero and it sounded like a rattle when you shook it. I had dave clements rebuild do a bunch of custom work to it to make it prettier and tighten it up and it shot better when it was loose. Not that every loose gun shoots better then a tight one. ITs just that if it shoots well dont sweat it. way to much store is put into having guns linebored and tightened.
