sst's
« on: November 27, 2010, 08:38:55 AM »
I've tried sst's 3 times now in 3 different guns with terrible groups in each. I'm talking 6-8" at 50 yds off the bench. Lightfields or Accutips I can usually shoot a minimum of 2'' or less at 50 and 2-3 at 100, sometimes less depending... Anyone else found sst's less than great???

Have tried SST's  three times. Out of a 870 with a Hasting barrel I found they would go through a target paper at 50 yards sideways around 1 out of 4 shots. Called the company to ask about this and they told me I needed a faster twist rate, I think my Hastings is 1:34 or 1:36. Cheeper to change slugs.

Coop,

Have you tried any different slugs?  I use the Lyman 525 grain in one of my Mossy 500s, and I get 1.5 at 75 yards.  Good enough for me as I hunt the Florida swamps in tight cover.   The Lyman's are also a bit more economical, too.

BTW, the Hastings barrel is a 1:34 twist rate.

In my ML the SST bullet does'nt kill deer very well, switched to XTP's. In that Hastings barrel try the Win. BRI's.

Tried them in 2 different H&R sluggers and most recently a Savage 20 ga. 220... Accutips and Lightfields no problem...

They didn't group in any of my slug guns Mossy trophy 500 12ga, NEF tracker II 12ga, NEF Tracker II 20ga, or my H&R 20ga USH.

My Browning BPS rifled barrel did the same thing. Im glad Im not the only one I thought I was crazy, mine were key holeing also. Lightfields were the best in mine 2" - 3" at 100yds.

P.S. Mine is a 20ga.

I don't know about target shooting but I shot 2 bucks in as many states DRT.  I have mine sightred fr bull at 150 yards and killed them at 110 and 130 respectively.  My gun is an 870 cantilever w/ a Bushnell Trophy on top.  The SST goes where i aim it very satisfied.
Please be sure to check your gun at the door.  WHAT!
