Can I cut and recrown a barrel myself?
« on: December 14, 2010, 03:18:51 AM »
Have a knight wolverine that I picked up for $80, I want to take some off the barrel for my son, it's to front end heavy. The smith wants $120 to cut and crown it, I can't justify that.

Has anyone ever done this, and can you help me out? I do not have a lathe.

Thanks,

Don

$120 ???  What a rip off.  You can do it yourself.  It's really no big deal.  A hack saw, a file and some wet/dry sandpaper will get it done.  I use a 1" square of sandpaper under something round and hard (like a large marble) to finish off the crown.

Take a look at this video.  You really don't need the specialty tools.

Go to the H&R Centerfire FAQs, scroll down to the ACCURIZING section, there are a few links on DIY cut and crowning, as Semisane said, it's not hard at all, I've done several on centerfire, muzzleloaders and shotguns, just don't cut it too short, leave a little extra length for "adjustments".  ;)
