My daughters ex 7600 makes meat
« on: November 16, 2010, 05:42:49 AM »
I shot a buck on opening day the 15th. 80 yard shot while it was walking broadside. The 243 win 100gr went in behind the front shoulder and exited out the opposit side rear quarter. The buck went about 30 yards more and piled up. I'm happy I thinking I might want a 308 in this. As far as the action goes it was great stayed on the deer while I cycled another round I like it.

If the .243 works for you why go to the .308?

A 243 with the proper bullet is a great killer. If it aint broke don't fix it!

That is a proper bullet for sure. My friends grandson used some 100 grain grand slams to take a very nice bear.

Our bears in Michigan go from 250lb to 500lb. I think thats the reason for the 308Win. I had a 308 [7.62x51] in the navy and a bolt in the same 308. Liked how that calibur worked on deer size animals. I guess what I'm trying to say is my only experance has been with 30 cal bullets. The 243 is very new to me.

If you add "bear" to the equation I can see the merit for a .308 ;)

I will second that !!
I got the '06 since it was there in front of as new with a used price tag . the recoil is enough , but then I see a limbsaver pad for any of the remington Syn rifles fit this gun. So this will make this gun a pussy cat.

I have a 336c marlin in 30-30 and now the 243win. Just was thinking about getting down to one rifle. I don't know why?

Well you probably miss the Marlin down the road as I Have many times .

Then for the one rifle and one load , I would stick with the 308-3006.
You then can hunt as you please unless your into the huge bear country .
If in open country I would tend to go 300 WSM

To be Honest I'm thinking about keeping the 7600 in 243 and the Marlin 30-30 and getting 7600 in 308.

Going with your earlier musings to just keep one rifle I would opt for the 30-30 if the effective range suits your requirement.

Ive hunted with the 30-30 for years and have used other rounds like the 243,308,270and the 30-06. Over 2/3 of my deer have been with the 30-30. If they ever offered a 7600 in the 30-30 I would jump all over it. I know they made them in the past by savage and in remington in 35rem. Thats why I think I'm leaning towards the 308.
