Savage ,bolt action,case extraction?
«

I bought a brand new Savage,in 243Win. It set in my gun cabinet for 2 years[never fired]. This fall i thought i would shoot it and let my granson use it.
It will pull the cases about half way out and then they pop off of the bolt!
Any ideas on the problem or how to fix it ?

Clean out the extractor in the bolt. Take the bolt out and put it in a large plastic bag you can work in with your hands. The extractor will push out toward the center of the bolt, under it is a little ball and a spring. Clean it all up. put a tiny amount of oil in it and put it back together (inside the bag) You need to hold the little ball down with a very small screw driver or the tip of a knife to slide the extractor back in. Thanks for the reply.

You need to see if the extractor is clipping into the rim properly, you can take to bolt out and clip a round in by hand and see what the extractor does. Does it drop the case when the neck of the cartridge is still in the chamber? Larry

You could try cutting a couple of coils off the ejector spring, but it is harder to remove, drive out a tiny pin. Still sounds like the extractor is not grabbing the rim properly, could be that the extractor spring is not strong enough. Larry

You could also send it back to Savage with a letter of explanation. They would probably fix it jelly-quick.
