Weatherby Vanguard Carbine
« on: December 08, 2011, 09:32:37 PM »
I posted this in the bolt guns forum but this would seem to be the more appropriate place for it. Do any of you have or have experience with the Weatherby Vanguard Carbine? Any insight you would have would be much appreciated considering one as a purchase in the near future. Thanks for your time and consideration.

If you are talking about the ones with the 20" barrel, I have a couple of the Vanguards and 3 of the Howa 20" rifles.  Minor differences between the two rifles, all 5 of mine are very good shooters.  Pretty hard to beat the quality you get for the money you pay.  Only thing I would put as a con would be the weight, they are solid and have the weight to show it.  DP

Ya I noticed they still weigh in around 7lbs. A little heavy for a carbine but how is the overall balance? Does it feel heavy in the front and hard to shoot off hand or are they fairly balanced?

Heavy, but very well balanced. If not for my tendency to trade guns regularly I would still own mine in .308. The balance makes it handle like a lighter gun to me. I've owned several Vanguards and all are good shooters.

I was considering one in 7mm-08 as my Dad used to have one and has a pile of brass and dies and bullets that he said he would give me so I have been debating it. Never owned anything in 7mm before so I thought it might be fun to play with. Thanks for your insight.

Get the 7-08, you will like it.  Easy on the shoulder, flat shooting, outstanding bullet selection, better performer that the OLD 7X57 Mauser which took hundreds of elephants in the hands of WDM Bell.  One of my favorite cartridges.  DP

My younger brother is a mega deer hunter, and has been for 30 years.  He and a select "chosen few" have the rights to hunt a 1,500 acre place, filled with forests and fields, that adjoins the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.  It is a virtual deer farm.

He routinely kills 5 or 6 a year, without much problem.  Very large animals.

For the first 22 years, he only used a .30-06.  Wouldn't shoot anything else.  About 8 years ago, though, I talked him into trying a 7mm-08, which he knew little or nothing about.

Now, all of his thirty caliber rifles are gone.  All of his rifles are in 7mm-08.  He said it is the perfect deer round, and you never need to handload.  The factory ammo Remington Core-Lokts are one shot killers.  He has a wife, daughter and son who deer hunt there too.  All of them shoot the 7mm-08 as well.

So, I think you would be very happy with the 7mm-08.

Regards,  Mannyrock

Great deer rifle... Balances perfectly!!! .270 Win. Heavy? I don't notice at 65, even with a deer in my pack!

I wish! I'd buy ten at that price. I had a Howa 1500 stainless/synthetic in 270 that was a real shooter....I paid 319.99 plus tax....still regret selling that one.....
