Advice: Affordable sidelock (cap) long rifle kit
« on: December 19, 2010, 09:39:46 AM »
I am thinking about building one of the do it yourself BP kits.  I'd like to get one of the longer style kits (like a Kentucky rifle).  I have seen them in all price ranges and wondered if anyone has a good place they would rec. for an affordable ($500 or less) kit like this.  I have some experiencing fitting and finishing stocks on a couple mauser kits so I would not be starting from ground zero.  Thanks all!
Phil

Pecatonica Longrifle , Look here:

Track of the Wolf has the same stuff but more expensive. There are a few others like Sitting Fox, TVM, or Chambers.

This is the least expensive kit I know of that will make a pretty decent rifle.

It's not a kit one can assemble with just a screw driver, it isn't inletted for the lock, triggers and breech tang, more of a "parts set" than a kit. They do have some fully inletted for a bit more money. The wood is not high grade currly maple for that price but will make an accurate, reliable and decent looking rifle.

the lyman great plains rifle in kit form is available from midsouth, midway and a few other places for around $400.00. it's not exactly a "long rifle" but it does have a 32in barrel and is about as accurate a reproduction of a hawken as you can get for less than a grand. mostly involves minor inletting clean-up, a  little rasping/sanding/finishing on the stock and browning/blueing of metal parts. for what it's worth and good luck to you, bubba.
