Question: .445 Super Mag BC Carbine Shorty??
« on: December 31, 2010, 04:01:18 AM »
I don't know.  Should I cut my .445 to 18 inches and put it on a BC Carbine stock?  Am I going to mind the recoil?  I love the other BC Shorties.

I have to agree, if you are going to go down, go to 16.5, the extra 1.5 " will make it handle easier but not perform noticeably less. If it was a 22-250 or something maybe yes, but not straight cases. I have even thought about getting the muzzle threaded for some type of flash supressor  or something to reduce the muzzle blast a bit but have not decided on what.

Go for it. Looks like a sweet project. It may be blasphemy but you always could put a recoil pad on it instead of that steel but plate.

The BC look in my opinion comes from the straight grip anyway.

Very nice looking handi's.

I think I'm gonna go for it.  My 16.5 .357 maxi sure is Handi.  In fact all 3 of them are; the 18 inch .38-55 and the standard .45LC are all sweet swinging.

Thanks guys,

Happy New Year

I had an extra set of BC wood and WAS going that route with my most recent shorty too... but I liked the feel and light weight of that handi grip too much. As a rule, I am not a fan of the plastic anything on a firearm. But I look at the Handis as a tool and frankly the plastic stocks work very well with them.

Maybe give that a try?

CW,
I have seen the posts of your handi's they all look great. It is a tough choice between the BC and the composite grip.

Pete,
I don't think you can go wrong whichever direction you head.

I just ordered a 357 mag that is going to get the BC stocks. Yep it is going to get maxified also.

Larry, I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and send it out to Wayne York at Oregunsmithing and let him do it.  In the meanwhile, I'll hunt down a BC Carbine stock for it.  I am really not equiped to cut it off square, recrown it and blue it.  I don't own a lathe or a drill press.  Tim rented the reamer and did the .445 part of it.  That much I'm sure you could do yourself.

Is your barrel an old or new one?  Overbored or not?  If it is an older overbored one, like mine, A Lee Factory Crimp Die is essential if you want to reload oversized bullets, especially in cut down or Winchester brass.

The .445 is a fantastic caliber to shoot and enjoy.  Do it.

Pete

I don't know if the barrel is old or newer, I got if off this forum and he didn't know either, it was drilled and tapped for sights and a scope mount. I ordered some Cerrosafe chamber casting alloy and will try to cast the chamber to see if it is oversize, that's the only way I know to check it. if it is I'll for sure make it a 445  ;D

Larry, it's the barrels that are overbored in the older .44s.  Check the year of manufacture and that'll give you the best clue.  I'm loading .433 Gas checked Semi Wad Cutters from Montana Bullet over 32 gr H110 running I believe 1580 by the chrony.  They shoot well in my older barrel.

Pete,

A 16.5" 445 SM Carbine will look GREAT!  You will not miss the barrel length once you add the 22" 444M to your stable. ::)

BTW, I don't think it is politically correct to refer to one of your guns as a "shorty".  How about velocity challenged or mobility improved?
