Mosin but what flavor?

Well I have been thinking of buying another mosin and well My brother in law was the only one who knew about it. This morning I wake up to find my wife had bought me one{If I would have seen it at the local shop I would have passed it up} now just trying to find out which it could be. I have crawled all over the web today looking for info on it and have not come up with anything. It has me stumped!!!! If you have a clue to its origin please post and let me know how you came to the conclusion you have.

You have a 'sporterized' cutdown with an ATI bolt and scope conversion.  Front sight looks like its off a US 1903 Springfield (update).

The round receiver with that date leads me to believe it may have begun life as a post-1928 Izhevsk M91/30.

Yea I was thinking that as well. Who ever did the work on this {Butchered} should have there butts kicked. Her heart was in the right place but my Brother in laws head was in his butt when he told her to buy it.
I have never owned one with the ATI bolt and I just dont like the look of them. Its all good I will look for the parts and try and get her as close as I can back to original or keep her a truck gun.
On a positive note whoever done the trigger work is a saint, it breaks at about 1 1/2 pounds no long creep like my M44 had. Will just have to try it out.

    If my wife bought me a gun I wouldn't complain!    I would just put iy in the truck and smile. There again, if some day you found one you like for a trade, you could just tell her it is the same gun and you have just fixed it up a little.
    As for the brother-in-law.....his heart is in the right place.....he just needs an education in firearms.

Rimfire ol buddy, I would wholeheartedly agree with Bingo and Airsporter.  True, this may not have been what you had thought about but you now have a butt kickin' woods rifle in the 30-06 league, and when you scope it you might be very surprised as to how accurate these things are. 

You mentioned not liking the looks of the ATI bolt conversion but the practicality of the conversion with a scope often outweighs a lot of disfavor.  If you want to play with it a bit see if it is bedded and if not, bed the action - those stocks were not known for their tight fit.  I have bedded a couple of beaters like that and the improvements are immediate. 

Have fun with it, thank your wife for a wonderful and thoughtful gift, consider how fortunate you are to have a wife who would go to that effort for you, and be happy gawddammit.

OK guys ok.
First off I love my Wife more than anything, and I thank God for bringing her into my life everyday. And I am thankful that she is a wonderful mother to our son.
And yes I am thankful that she thought of me enough to buy me a firearm not many women would do that. Yes the rifle was not something I would buy will I sell it or trade it off NO. If it doesnt perform as I think it should will I complain about it Never!
This gun will never leave because she bought it for me.
I have every intention of making this rifle shoot to my expectations.
Now as far as the BIL goes he is very educated on firearms but his education is limited to Remington/ Savage/Mossberg ect ect ect....
His thinking is if I was going to have one that is the one I would want.  I mean we were discussing deer rifles one year and a guy was going to buy an SKS to hunt with and his reply was it would not be a very good rnd for deer. My father in law and I just stared at each other in disbelief that he would say that.
I have already scoped the rifle and will be heading to the back yard tomorrow with it so you guys will get a report in the afternoon.

my stepdad bought one a few years a go in the exact same condition even with the 03 front sight.  The stock had been painted black on it though.  It shoots great.  He put a 91/30 stock on it and scoped it after removing the front sight.  now its his favorite mosin and he has alot of them too!  I think that you should be thrilled with the rifle especially since it its a gift from your wife.

Just came in from the back yard only have 50yrds here to shoot so bear with me. Now last year I was scrambling to find my father in law gift for Christmas and came across the camber inserts for the mosins so I thought eh I will buy him one. Well being the gun pig I am I bought one for myself as well.
So I tried it out first with 32 auto, fired a 3 shot group from the bench and well it was a good 8" group. Loaded the ammo she had bought with the rifle which is head stamped 188/71 ? fired and hit exactly where I had aimed.
Loaded again and again and got a 3 shot 1/2" group at 50yrds, went back to the 32 auto and it yielded a nice 1' group.
Probably needed a little fouling from the full deal to get it where it needed to be.
God I love it cant wait to get to the range with good 200 yrd shot.

  I'm sure you already know to flush it and clean well after imported military ammo.  Have you read much on 7.62x54r ?

Yea I have read some on there, I am really wanting to start reloading for it. I just have to wait for the Tax fairy to bring me a check.
I have to get quite a few dies this year.
And yes corrosive ammo is the reason I want to load for this and try and get the most accurate load I can for it.

I have a M44 that was made in 1944, with the bayonet. Sure is fun to shoot. Big fireball when she goes off. Trigger has been replaced with both Finnish M39 trigger and sear/trigger spring. World of difference. The old trigger you didn't know when it would go off. Now I have a nice two stage trigger. Frank

I had a M44 about 10 years ago, was shooting 1932 machine gun ammo in it. That thing beat me to death so I sold it to a buddy, I never knew it was the MG ammo that was doing it to me.
