Restoring Bannerman's Island
« on: December 21, 2010, 02:52:16 AM »
I figure this deserves a spot here as Bannerman's was one of the reasons some began collecting military items including cannon,
in fact if it were not for this institution many of the old cannon in private hands today may have gone to the scrap heap...

There is now a move to restore the Castle see link:

Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Quite a bit of additional information can be had about Bannerman's Island Arsenal form KABAR2's personal experience.  Even I have been there and put in my 2 cents worth in the Second "What is it? Where is it Contest?" in the winter of 2008.  I'll post the Tie-Breaker photo for that fun Contest soon.

Taken from the east bank of the Hudson River, south of Bannerman's Island Arsenal, you can see the Castle arms and armor storage building and also the house he built for family visits, to the left in the trees.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!
