new mount for open rear sight
« on: December 24, 2010, 01:36:42 PM »
Im shooting my BC in a shouetzen match. its 200 yds off hand. it uses both scope and open sights. I wanted an adjustable sight that would not get in the way while shooting scoped so I came up with this.

I still need to shorten the mount and move it back on its rail. I made it from a rimfire scope rail on a weaver scope ring. it allowed me to use a williams FP sight that I had. DR

And the front sight is high enough to match that at 200yd.?

That is a cool set up. But you said it uses scope and sites? Do you mean you at the same time? or can switch from one to the other?

Some matches have 'iron sight' and scope classes; this type of set up allows a quick switch by dropping one and installing the other, both -0-ed for the course of fire.
DR, I see a lot of elevation marks left on your staff, like it is at about as low as it can go in the pic.
22" of drop doesnt mean you need 22" of adjustment. That is a calc of what happens to the bullet after it exits the muzzle if there is no elevation (like 'laser sighted). A bullet from a firearm has a parabolic trajectory to the target, and rises above the line of sight (unless you are very close) before falling below. That height above is your mid-range often expressed as '+ so many inches' at, in this case 100yd. for a 200yd, -0-. A rule of thumb is that the mid-range is about 1/4 of the bullet drop from the level. It is a little easier to visualize if you think of it as a baseball. The effect of this is that you get a lot more elevation out of a sight than it might initially look like.
Of course, you probably already know this, and have adjusted your sight up the scale to get your -0- and are near the top of the range of adj.; if so, you could gain a bit by using the thicker H&R scope rail with your nicely done sight mount.
BTW, I have shot Schuetzen for some years now, too. Good luck and have fun; it is an offhand game and worth the effort.

I made a quick detachable rear site for a Ruger bolt gun once. Took an extra Ruger ring and ground the bottom half off flat and attached a WGRS site to it. I had to have a pretty tall front sight which bothered me a bit because I was using the rifle for hunting, but it never came loose. I could take the reciever off and replace it with a scope and never seemed to have zero problems.

guncrank, I had not thought of a thicker mount. I have one on another rifle, that I could easily swap. I have a little tweeking to do on the mount before im compleatly happy.I need to trim back the length so that the sight will be up close to the old scope ring. that will allow me to move it back over the hammer and closer to my eye.

I really enjoy the off hand portion, Im going to have to step up my bench rest shooting to be competitive tho. the one match I shot I was dead last in the bench but shot well enough off hand to score a 4th and a 2nd place. I like the club and the guys I shot with so I think Ill stick with this for awhile. a couple of years ago I tried silhouette shooting but didnt feel welcome at the local clubs. one was a pistol club that had side matches for long guns, and the other was a private club that just didnt want outsiders.

thanks all, Im glad to hear that others have tried this sucessfully. DR
