Cougar in the neighborhood

My neighbor about a half mile across the road informed me yesterday they found cougar tracks within 100 yards of their house and tracked it another half mile to another neighbor's place where they lost it.  The story is backed up by four other family members, and they all know what bobcat tracks look like.  Evidently it is a big one.  They measured 11 feet between tracks at a couple of points and indicated the tracks themselves were very large.........but of course, there isn't a breeding population here......sure. ::)

Never could figure why the DNR thinks Cougars don't breed while in Michigan?????  Makes about as much sense as some of the other things they come up with!

Couple weeks ago there was a picture in the local paper (Iron Mt.) of a cougar someone down by Wallace in Menominee Co. got on their trail cam.  Surprisingly, the DNR said it was definitely a Cougar - however, again they added that there was no evidence of a "breeding population".

Yeah I did. They also told me the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny sometimes bring them......and that's a DNR fact.

 It's probably better they don't accept & talk about a 'breeding population'. That could very well lead to studies & re-introductions for 'genetic diversity'. There's enough predator pressure on deer now, without adding more cougars. I know the pro-wolf folks would be all for the cougars too. It's been a better way to mess up deer hunters than their success with banning hunting.

 A funny story; About 2-3 Christmases ago my Sister bought me a sweatshirt at closeout from an outdoor store. The main title was 'Cougar Hunter'. It had all kinds of comments around the main title, like 'class of 69' & a bunch of other comments, forgotten at the moment. After I looked it over I asked, 'do you know what this is about'? She said just a cougar hunting sweatshirt. I had to send her & the wife to the net to see what a 'cougar' was in today's slang. I guess they don't get out much. I told her I would still wear the shirt, cutting wood or whatever. Whenever I see a cougar thread I'm looking to see that 40'ish, still has it type lady. I'll put the 4 legged cat in the same category as the wolf. I knew a guy once who let a cat from Central America go in an IL forest preserve. I think that's how some of these oddball critters end up in strange places.

Hi All. I live s.w. of Chase Mi.  back in the woods. Saw a black one in Aug. as it crossed the road in front of me. They are for real. Check out www.savethecouger.org  This site lists county by county sightings in Mi.  You will not believe it.  michstew

Curious, where was this cougar seen? I live in SW MI and have the back half of an animal on game camera that looks feline more than it looks like coyote.

About 7.5 miles NE of Engadine on the U.P.  I don't consider wolves or coyotes much of a threat, but this boy is.  If he gets anywhere around my livestock, he'll get introduced to my Handi Rifle in .500S&W.
