I tried picking and eating ostrich fern fiddleheads this summer and they were great sort of like asparagus crosses with a green bean. You have to identify Ostrich fern only, and it is simple enough for a kid to do it. We got a bag full in a matter of 10 minutes or so and that was leaving over half of each clump for seed. Anybody else pick em?

I found some last spring but was not sure if they were the correct fern or not. I took a few pictures of them, and identified them in a book as safe to eat. I didn't make it back in time to pick any though...this year I will try some.

yup, i pick and eat them. good eating.
to identify, look at the stalk. if it is the shape of a piece of celery stalk, it is an ostrich fern and good eats. if the stalk is a round shape, do not eat it.
