Well, I hunt fall turkey in hills with thick under brush with a mix of hardwood and softwood
I usually scout for a few weeks before hand looking for roosts and turkey scratchings on the ground.
also keeping an ear out for hens and jakes.
When the season arrives I forget about the hens and concentrate on the jakes
They get antsy in the fall and will make mistakes easier then the toms which are too busy eating anyways.
I use a Quaker Boy Challenging Jake Gobble Call. Using a 3 or 5 sound shake, gets them interested if they are in the area. If they are fighting each other you will hear them and most likely it will be a good day for you. Don’t call too much, maybe once every few minutes. Cover your whole body in camo, including hands and face. I like to sit in low spots and let them come to me. My shots are close at 25-35 yards. I Stay a while, maybe a 1/2 hour and then move a little distance and set up again.
If you spend the time and there’s turkey in the area, sooner or later a Hot Shot Jake will come to challenge your call! I hunt in the North East but I’m guessing Jakes in the fall are the same in most places. Enjoy, it’s a fun sport!
