silver nitrate
« on: December 20, 2010, 06:56:52 AM »
I'd like to make a concave mirror out of a pyrex dish to put behind a bunch of candles, coal oil lamp, or whatever.
So where do I get the silver nitrate to do it?
I've blown glass in a class for it and the old boy showed us how to make Christmas tree ornaments with a reflective finish, but he's long since gone, the local university offers no more classes, and I don't need a ton.
   So... any ideas?

Have you tried a windshield, glass and mirrow store?

Neat idea.
Wonder how much more reflective that would be, compared to a highly polished stainless steel mixing bowl?

I've checked out fish-eye mirrors, but I'd like a lot bigger bulge. Maybe one of those plastic ceiling mirrors they use to see if you're gonna run into someone coming down another hall.

Never thought of a mixing bowl, but used to use stainless mirrors at a sawmill. They did the trick.
 I've even got a polisher.

You guys have already saved me an inordinate amount of work, not to mention money. Seems anything made out of silver is pretty pricy.

 Thanks for the ideas.

I have thought about useing snack  chip bags to make a parabolic reflector for a solar cooker. The inside of the bag is highly reflective. Wouldn't have to be perfectly smooth. Build the lense out of wood or any applicapable material and then glue the bags to the surface as required. I never have tried it though. ear

Some use it to mark dogs while hunting . They used to get it at drug stores . Maybe a hunting dog supply would have it

My nephew says they use silver nitrate to stop the bleeding when they chop off puppy tails. So maybe a vet supplier.

The tater chip bag is an interesting idea. I wonder if it comes in heat shrink?

An art teacher also showed me a do-dad she had make with some kind of kiln-fired glaze. It came out looking like gold.     ?? a mirror's a mirror as long as it shines.

This whole idea started with a trip through the local (ancient) N.W.Territory governor's house. Amazing the amount of light thrown into a dark room with a convex mirror behind a half dozen candles. Ain't much good for combing your face, but sure does magnify the light.

You might try buying one of those large shiny ballons usesd for birthdays or special occasions. The material is called mylar. I used one of these for a science project when my youngest daughter was in school. You may even be able to use a heat gun to help stretch the material  to fit perfectly.

Good idea CK. pretty sure those are re-inflatable. might be that a few around the candles diffuses the light just as well as a single mirror.

Would the spy eye mirrows that are used in quick stop stores work? You might find a store that is being re-done or torn down. ear

A pharmacist can blend some for you.  I once had a prescription for a plantar wart on the sole of my foot.  Doubt I had industrial strength but the doctor warned me that it was strong stuff and to be careful not to spill it.

Thanks for all the ideas. It gives me several options.
